BOONVILLE, Ind. - Members of the IUPUI women's golf team capped a chilly opening round at the Charles Braun Jr. Intercollegiate on Monday (Oct. 29), hosted by University of Evansville at Quail Crossing. The tournament is named after the former UE women's golf coach who passed away last April.

Sophomore Carolyn Kupchik led IUPUI's four individuals with a 9-over 81 and classmate Kelli Witt shot a 10-over 82.

Sophomore Lauren Mains shot an 88 and freshman Karisa Stojkovich carded a 113. Butler's Isabella Lambert leads the 72-player field with after an even par 72 and two others are tied at 75.

"It was windy and I think it's a very good time for the girls to learn and get better," IUPUI head coach John Andrews said. "There were 25 mile an hour winds today and that's like what we'll play at conference. From a learning experience, this was great for them. It's not all about stroke average and shooting good scores as much as it is getting used to making different shots and learning more as a player."

Witt made double bogey on her first hole of the day and avoided big numbers the rest of her round, while Kupchik's day was similar.

"For the most part, they hit a lot of good shots. They each made one or two big numbers, but overall were pretty consistent."

Andrews continues to be impressed with the improvements made by his sophomores while Stojkovich is playing in just her second collegiate golf tournament this week.

"They're all better players this year than they were last year and that's not even a contest," Andrews said. "They have to be the Lauren Kuss', Jordan Essman's and Jordan Woods' next year. That's the goal.

"Karisa needs a winter of work before I can really analyze her game. We're going to work hard this winter and continue to improve."

Play is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 30) due to anticipated cold weather.
