This is the second segment previewing the 2012-13 IUPUI women's basketball team. The Jags play their first exhibition on Monday, Nov. 5, against Franklin College at 7 p.m. at The Jungle, before opening their regular-season at home on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Noon against Grace College.
2012-13 FORWARDS
The IUPUI forwards are led by first-team all-conference performer
Kerah Nelson, who averaged 16.2 ppg and 6.2 rpg to lead the Jaguars in both categories. Nelson was the focal point for opposing defenses a year ago and still managed to score 518 points on the season, ranking sixth in IUPUI history for points in a single-season.
Heading into her senior season, Nelson was named a Preseason First-Team All-Summit League performer.
“Kerah has had an outstanding career at IUPUI and is looking to have a big senior year,” Parkinson said about his three-year starter. “With more offensive weapons and depth on the perimeter, it should give her more space to operate in the post.”
After a solid freshman season,
Nevena Markovic looks to continue her development as a sophomore. Markovic averaged 8.9 ppg and 5.5 rpg in her rookie season, and ranked sixth in the Summit League averaging 1.7 bpg. While those numbers are impressive for a freshman, Parkinson expects big things this year from Markovic and looks to use her versatility to provide match-up problems for the opposition.
“(Nevena) is a very versatile player who can create matchup problems with her ability to stretch the defense. I am excited to see how her increased strength from the weight room will benefit her on the block,” Parkinson said.
Claire Holba and
Alyssa Holder each saw action last year and provide depth behind Nelson and Markovic. The newcomer to the group is freshman
Akilah Sims from Fort Wayne, Ind. Sims was the highest rated recruit for the Jaguars coming out of high school, and her athleticism and speed gives Parkinson an opportunity to change tempo and run up and down the floor.
