MUNCIE, Ind. – Looking to salvage a weekend split following a 6-1 loss to Marquette last night, the IUPUI men’s tennis team got a win from
Nick Volz at the top of the singles order, but it wasn’t enough as the Jaguars fell by another 6-1 decision Saturday evening against Ball State.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 1-4 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 2-2.
The Jags found themselves behind after doubles play with BSU capturing all three matches by scores of 8-2, 8-2, and 8-5 at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
However, the Jags evened the score at the No. 1 singles spot behind Volz. After capitalizing on a break in the opening set to win 6-4, Volz found himself in a tighter second set. Volz and his opponent, Dalton Albertin, could not shake one another and needed a tiebreaker to determine whether Volz would be the winner or if the match would proceed into a tiebreaker. Volz emerged victorious giving the Jags their lone point.
Jags players at spots two through five all fell in straight sets securing the win for Ball State, but IUPUI had a chance to get another point at the No. 6 singles spot.
After dropping a first-set tiebreaker,
Thomas Gans rallied back for a 7-5 second-set win forcing a third-set tiebreaker. In the race to 10 points, Gans came up just a bit short falling 10-7.
The Jags have two weeks off until beginning a seven-day, seven-match stretch on Saturday, Feb. 11, against McKendree University and Saint Louis.
