MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – In search of its first win in program history over Marquette, the IUPUI men's tennis team seized the momentum late in doubles play only to have the Golden Eagles hold on for the valuable doubles point before winning five of six singles matches to defeat the Jaguars, 6-1, Friday evening.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 1-3 on the season.
After having its top doubles tandem of
Thomas Gans and
Patrick O'Neill fall, 8-6,
Nick Volz and
Joel Modesitt evened things up with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, turning the focus to the No.3 doubles match.
Deon Shafer and
Armaan Choudhary mounted a furious rally to send their decisive match to a tiebreaker, but it wasn't enough as Marquette's freshman duo of James Stark and Cameron Tehrani held on in the tiebreaker to secure the 9-8 win and the doubles point.
In singles action, IUPUI struggled as each of its first five players failed to win more than three games in a set as each fell in straight sets.
However, the Jags lone point came from
Deon Shafer at the No. 6 spot as he downed Drake Kakar by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
The Jaguars are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when it heads to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
