COLUMBIA, Mo. - The IUPUI men's golf team slid to a 12th place finish at the Columbia Orthopedic Group Mizzou Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon, finishing the 16-team tournament at 942. The Jaguars posted a final round 310 and fell three spots after entering the final round in ninth-place.
Host Missouri won the tournament with a score of 900 while Eastern Michigan was second at 922. IUPUI closed two shots behind 11th-place Northern Illinois and four back of Summit League foe Oral Roberts.
"Overall, we haven't played as well as we thought we would," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "Painful isn't the right word, but it's been hard to watch. They don't look bad out there and I don't think it's big things. It's the little things that make a difference."
Junior
Michael Powell's 74 highlights the IUPUI effort on Tuesday as the Kokomo-native finished with five birdies over the final 12 holes. Powell ended the event at 237 (81-82-74).
"He might have had one of the best par saves I've seen this year," Andrews said. "He finished the tournament on a high note."
Classmate
Ben Engle was IUPUI's low man at 236 (80-77-79) and
Michael Davan matched Powell's effort at 237 (84-76-77). Freshmen
Jose Pablo Segurola and
Juan Diego Plasencia capped the lineup at 238 and 242, respectively.
"I know Engle isn't happy with the way he finished," Andrews said. "I thought Jose played fairly well. He looked pretty good today.
"It seemed like Engle, Davan and Powell played good every round in the fall and then we would have another person play well with them. That may not have been the case, but it sure felt like it. That hasn't happened yet this spring. I think it will, but it hasn't yet."
Missouri's Jace Long earned medalist honors at 216 and his teammate Stuart Ballingall was second at 220. Ball State's Alex Stinson placed third at 222.
The Jaguars will return to action on Saturday when they begin the adidas Hoosier Invitational at the Varsity Course in Bloomington, Ind.. The 54-hole event will start with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The 14-team field includes five in-state opponents
