INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in its final match before heading to Fort Wayne, Ind., for the 2011 Summit League Tennis Championships, the IUPUI men’s tennis team got back to its winning ways with a 6-1 win over Butler Tuesday afternoon at Butler University.

 

The win improved the Jags overall record to 8-15 on the season and gets IUPUI back into the win column as it prepares for its Summit League Tournament semifinal against Western Illinois on Friday, April 22, at 3 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind.

 

The Jaguars got off to a great start in doubles action as their top team of Bren Vasalakis and Dan Klingenberg won a close match, 9-7. Even though IUPUI’s best doubles tandem on the season, Joel Modesitt and Nick Volz, dropped a tough 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles, the Jags came away with the doubles point as Ivan Mojsejev and Chase Emerson won their doubles match by default.

 

Mojsejev was unable to come out victorious in his No. 1 singles match dropping a 6-1, 7-6 (4) decision to Butler’s Herron, but he was picked up by his teammates.

 

Volz rallied from a one-set-to-none deficit to emerge victorious in a third-set tiebreaker to put IUPUI back on top, 2-1, before straight-set wins from Klingenberg and Modesitt secured the win for the Jags.

 

Despite having the win already in hand, Vasalakis and Emerson each were victorious in their No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively, with straight-set wins completing the 6-1 outcome.

 

The Jags and Leathernecks begin their Summit League semifinal at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center in Fort Wayne. The winner of Friday's match-up will take on the winner of the UMKC/Oral Roberts match on Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m.

 

Parking for the tournament is available in Lots 11-13 adjacent to the tennis facility and admission is free for all fans.
