ELMHURST, Ill. – For the second time in as many seasons, the IUPUI men’s tennis team will be competing in the Summit League Tennis Championship when it travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., April 22-23. IUPUI, the No. 3 seed based upon its 4-2 league record, will be taking on the No. 2 seed Western Illinois Leathernecks.

 

“We are very excited and focused on competing for the conference title this weekend,” said head men’s tennis coach Brandon Currie. “We have worked extremely hard the past few weeks and everyone is feeling good and healthy.” 

 

IUPUI and Western Illinois recently met on April 9 with the Jaguars dropping a 5-2 decision at home. In that match, the Jaguars got off to a great start using wins by Dan Klingenberg and Ivan Mojsejev at No. 3 doubles, and Joel Modesitt and Nick Volz at No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point.

 

However, in singles play, WIU tallied wins in five of the six singles matches, including a pair of three-set decisions at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions. Volz was the only singles winner for the Jaguars.

 

“Our match against Western Illinois will definitely be a battle, but the guys are feeling very confident and excited about the opportunity to compete for a conference title," Currie added.

 

The Jags and Leathernecks begin their Summit League semifinal at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center in Fort Wayne. The winner of Friday's matchup will take on the winner of the No. 1 UMKC/No. 4 Oral Roberts match on Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. 

Parking for the tournament is available in Lots 11-13 adjacent to the tennis facility and admission is free for all fans.
