WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The IUPUI men's golf team concluded play at the C&G Bank Intercollegiate on Tuesday, tying for 11th of 24 teams at 598 (297-301). James Madison won the tournament at 572 while Radford was second at 580. USC Upstate (582), UNC-Greensboro (585) and Towson (588) rounded out the top five.

"Our depth is obviously showing," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "We needed it at this tournament. My three studs didn't play very well, but the fourth one started to come around. (Engle, Davan and Powell) never got comfortable."

Freshman Juan Diego Plasencia led the Jaguars at 148 (76-72) and tied for 30th among the 126-player field. The Mexico-native carded an even par 72 on Tuesday, including an eagle on the par-5 No. 13.

"Juan D. has played well all spring," Andrews said.

"I think I was just very consistent," Plasencia said. "I didn't miss many fairways today. I can say my confidence level is pretty high. I'm buying into all my hard work and it's paying off.

"If I'm doing the things I'm told to, I'll continue to get better and that's what I'm trying to do out there."

The freshman upstaged the group of upperclassmen for the second straight tournament as junior Ben Engle came in at 149 (73-76) and senior Ben Moster closed at 152 (78-74). Junior Michael Davan stumbled on Tuesday after sitting in a tie for seventh entering the final round. Davan posted a final round 83 to finish at 154. Junior Michael Powell finished the event at 156 (77-79).

"Engle started badly both days," Andrews said. "Davan obviously didn't play well today, but I'm not worried about him.

"Ben played better today. I expect it to lead to better things this spring. I think it'll continue when we play at Butler."

James Madison's Ryan Vince finished in a three-way tie at 141 and beat teammate Chris Wellde and Delaware's Justin Martinson in a three-hole playoff for medalist honors.

IUPUI will now return home before playing in the Butler Spring Invitational at Prestwick Country Club in Avon, Ind. on Mar. 28-29. Andrews thinks that the Jaguars' will continue to improve as the spring moves forward.

"They've been working on their swings all winter, so now it's just a matter of going out and playing golf. It's more about just hitting shots now."
