JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman
Jose Pablo Segurola leads IUPUI's four individual entries as the men's golf team competed against Butler, Eastern Illinois and Green Bay at Windsor Parke Golf Course on Thursday. The same four schools will match-up again on Friday.
Segurola, a native of Spain, carded an opening round 77 to lead the Jaguars.
"Jose's a very talented young man," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "He's been going through some of the typical freshman struggles like being away from home and playing on different types of grasses and being on my time for when he has to be up and be at the course. But he's extremely talented and I think he's going to blossom in our program."
Fellow freshman
Juan Diego Plasencia, coming off a second place finish at the recent Don Benbow Invitational struggled on Thursday, posting an 83. However, Andrews is still confident in his rookie.
"Juan D. can still win it. Jose can win it. They're both that good," Andrews said.
Junior
Philip Wirkkala also came in at 83 while senior captain
Ben Moster fired an 84. Moster, a former All-Summit League performer, is a key cog in the Jaguars' postseason hopes this season.
"The biggest thing for tomorrow is if (Ben) Moster is going to come and play like Moster?" Andrews said. "We knew it was a much tougher course today, but he just didn't play well. I think he'll respond and play well tomorrow though."
The 36-hole event will conclude with a single round on Friday.
