INDIANAPOLIS – In its final tune up before Summit League action begins in 12 days, the IUPUI men’s tennis team got back on the winning track defeating Chicago State, 7-0, Sunday afternoon.
The Jags jumped out to an early lead behind
Bren Vasalakis and
Joe Hammond, who won a tiebreaker to capture their No. 1 doubles match, 8-7. From that point,
Nick Volz and
Joel Modesitt quickly put IUPUI up 1-0 winning their doubles match by an 8-1 margin.
In singles action,
Ivan Mojsejev overcame a 6-4 opening-set loss with an impressive 6-1 second-set win, sending his match to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Mojsejev and Chicago State’s Chopra went back and forth before Mojsejev emerged victorious winning, 11-9.
Similar to Mojsejev, Volz had to go to a third set by way of winning the first set, 6-3, before his opponent reversed the score in the second set. Volz delivered in the clutch and eked out a 10-8 tiebreaker win to keep the momentum on the Jags side.
Chase Emerson continued his strong play for the weekend coasting to a 6-0, 6-2 straight-sets victory, and for the first time this season,
Taylor Tunis saw action after missing the first portion of the season with an injury and won his first outing back in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
The win upped the Jags record to 3-10 on the season heading into their first conference cluster of the season.
IUPUI next heads to Tulsa, Okla., on Friday, March 25, to take on Oral Roberts in its Summit League opener. The Jags will then head to Kansas City, Mo., to meet UMKC on Saturday, March 26, before rounding out their trip on Monday, March 28 in Macomb, Ill., against South Dakota State.

-- On Friday evening, the Jaguars got off to a great start by rallying to win the doubles point, but Wright State came back to take four of the six singles matches and eked out a 4-3 victory.
Joe Hammond and
Bren Vasalakis led things off in doubles action for the Jaguars, but came up on the wrong side of an 8-4 decision.
With the Jags already down one match in doubles play,
Joel Modesitt and
Nick Volz came through with a huge 8-6 win in No. 2 doubles making the third and final doubles match the decisive one.
In the last doubles match,
Dan Klingenberg and
Ivan Mojsejev came through and used two breaks to capture the 8-4 win and the doubles point for IUPUI.
In singles play, Mojsejev, Volz, and Klingenberg, each lost tough singles matches at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 spots, as the momentum switched back to Wright State.
The Raiders continued their strong play in the No. 4 singles match with Brian Dredge jumping out to a one set to none lead with a 6-4 win over Modesitt. However, Modesitt reversed the trend and bounced back with 7-6 wins in both the second and third sets bringing the score to 3-2.
Chase Emerson followed Modesitt’s lead and took his No. 5 singles match, 6-3, 6-4, evening the score at 3-3.
The see-saw battle continued in the No. 6 singles match with Wright State’s Dan Hyman taking the first set, 6-1, but Hammond retaliated with a 7-6 second-set win moving the match to a third and final set.
Hammond did his best to stay close, but Hyman moved his way to a 6-3 third-set win giving Wright State the 4-3 win.
