PEORIA, Ill. – Despite having one of its weekend matches cancelled due to weather, the IUPUI men’s tennis team was still able to get in its match against Bradley on Sunday, Feb. 6, but the Jaguars came up just short in their bid for their second win of the season falling to the Braves, 4-3.
In a tightly contested doubles point, the No. 1 doubles tandem of
Bren Vasalakis and
Joe Hammond dropped their match by a score of 8-4, but they were picked up by the duo of
Joel Modesitt and
Nick Volz. Modesitt and Volz secured an 8-5 triumph, giving IUPUI an opportunity to salvage the doubles point.
In the deciding third doubles match,
Dan Klingenberg and
Chase Emerson were able to push the match into a tiebreaker but could not come out with the win falling 9-8 (8-6).
The top of the Jags lineup in singles play picked up a pair of valuable wins as
Ivan Mojsejev and Volz each picked up wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Mojsejev went to a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets with Hamish Weerasinghe and in the race to 10 points, Mojsejev needed extra points to pull out a 12-10 win to earn the victory.
Volz continued IUPUI’s strong play with a win in No. 2 singles action, downing Juan Cuadrado in straight sets by identical 6-3 scores.
Even though Klingenberg fell in straight sets at No. 3 singles, IUPUI took the No. 4 singles match behind Modesitt. Like Mojsejev, Modesitt split the first two sets with his opponent and in the tiebreaker, Modesitt pulled out a 10-7 victory, giving the Jags wins in three of the first four singles matches.
Unfortunately for IUPUI, Hammond came up just short in No. 5 doubles losing in a decisive third set, in addition to Hammond dropping his No. 6 singles match in straight sets giving Bradley the 4-3 victory.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 1-6 on the season, while Bradley improved to 2-2.
The Jags return to the court with a pair of matches this weekend. IUPUI heads to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State on Friday, Feb. 11, before returning home to take on Toledo on Sunday, Feb. 13.
