DAYTON, Ohio – The IUPUI men’s tennis team returned to its winning ways by taking down the University of Dayton, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio, as the Jaguars improved to 2-9 on the season.

"It was a great win for our team today,” said head men’s tennis coach Brandon Currie. “We came out and played intense doubles, and we were very focused in singles. Dayton is a solid team and we came ready to play against them. This was a great win for our program and will help prepare us for our conference season."

Joe Hammond and Bren Vasalakis opened the match at No. 1 doubles and were neck-and-neck with Dayton’s top doubles tandem. Unfortunately for IUPUI, Hammond and Vasalakis came up on the short end of the tiebreaker, 10-6, as they dropped their doubles match, 9-8.

However, Hammond and Vasalakis were picked up by their teammates as Nick Volz and Joel Modesitt evened the doubles matches at one match apiece with an 8-4 win, before Ivan Mojsejev, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, and Dan Klingenberg were victorious in No. 3 doubles to complete the come-from-behind victory and secure the doubles point.

The Jags carried the momentum gained in doubles play into singles action as Hammond, Chase Emerson, and Modesitt each registered singles victories at the four, five, and six spots, respectively, clinching the win.

IUPUI continued to play well in some tighter matches as Klingenberg was victorious over Andrew Hanley by scores of 7-5, 7-6 (3) in No. 3 singles, while Volz went to a pair of tiebreakers and won both to win in straight sets (7-6 (4), 7-6(3)) over Joe West in No. 2 singles.

After falling in a hole with a 6-4 loss in the first set, Mojsejev captured all the momentum with a 6-0 second set win. However, Mojsejev fell, 6-3, in the third and final set as Robert Salcedo took the only point for Dayton on the day.

The Jags have almost two weeks off before returning to the court on Friday, March 11, when they host Wright State.
