INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men’s tennis team played its second of five straight home matches Friday night, but dropped a 6-1 decision to Detroit Mercy. The Jaguars had their opportunities to make things interesting, but IUPUI came up just short in securing the doubles point and lost a three-set singles match.

Bren Vasalakis and Joe Hammond opened up at No. 1 doubles for the Jags and the duo did not disappoint as they captured a tightly contested match, 9-7. Similar to the first doubles match, Joel Modesitt and Nick Volz found themselves in a match that would go down to the wire. The sophomore duo battled to end but came out on the wrong side falling, 9-7, placing the emphasis on the No. 3 doubles match.

Unfortunately for IUPUI, the No. 3 doubles match was not as close as the first two and Detroit’s final doubles tandem took the match, 8-3, to secure the doubles point.

Following the tough doubles matches, Ivan Mojsejev got IUPUI on the board in his No. 1 singles match with a decisive  6-2, 6-3 win over Nick Tolomei.

However, after Mojsejev’s match, Detroit’s depth carried the Titans to victory.

After a 6-2 opening set loss, Volz played a much better second set but lost his tiebreaker, 7-5, en route to a 7-6 second-set loss.

Klingenberg played well early against Chris Cheung with a 7-5 opening set win, but Chang rallied and used a key break in each of the next two sets to secure a 6-4 second-set win and a 7-5 third-set triumph to complete the comeback.

Down the stretch, Detroit closed out the match with straight-set wins at the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 spots to finalize the 6-1 win.

IUPUI will have seven days off before returning to the court on Saturday, Feb. 26, when it welcomes Dayton to Indianapolis for a dual match set to begin at 2 p.m.
