SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS

-
The Hoosiers are 1-4 on the road this season with its lone road win coming at Belmont, 63-52, on Nov. 18.
-
IU has two players scoring in double figures led by Aulani Sinclair’s 13.3 ppg. Jasmine McGhee joins Sinclair in double digits averaging 11.0 ppg.
-
On the season, the Hoosiers are shooting 35.6 percent (178-500) from the floor, including 26.3 percent (25-of-95) from three.
-
Indiana will have a height advantage over the Jags and one of IU’s strengths lies in its rebounding. The Hoosiers are averaging 40.8 rebounds per game, led by Georgie Jones’ 8.2 rpg.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST INDIANA
-
Sunday’s meeting against the Hoosiers is the second meeting between the two in-state programs with IU holding the 1-0 lead.

A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST GAME
-
IUPUI struggled from the field and could not stop the easy transition buckets for Southern Illinois as the Salukis ran past the Jaguars, 77-63.
-
Cartaesha Macklin scored 27 points for the Salukis and when she wasn’t scoring, she drove past IUPUI defenders and found her teammates for wide open three’s as they connected on 9-of-17 attempts from downtown.
-
In addition to Macklin’s 27 points Teri Oliver tacked on 22 points for SIU on 7-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-9 from long distance.
-
The first half was a half of runs beginning with the Salukis sprinting out to a 7-0 lead just 1:45 into the game.
-
Despite the Salukis quick start, the Jags turned up their defensive intensity and used four points apiece by Dawn Luster and Emily Phillips during a 10-0 run to put IUPUI in front, 10-7, with 14:00 to play.
-
Just as the Jaguars looked to have found an offensive rhythm, SIU responded with a 16-2 run spanning from the 10:35 mark to the 7:05 mark catapulting the Salukis in front, 23-12.
-
In the final seven minutes of the first half, 2-of-7 shooting and careless turnovers continued to hurt the Jags as Southern Illinois pushed its lead to 38-20 entering the half.
-
SIU opened the second half on a 7-0 run to widen its lead to 25 points, before a 7-0 IUPUI response brought its deficit back to 18 points by the first media timeout.
-
A Janna Eichelberger free throw with 15:13 to play reduced the Jags halftime deficit by one point, but a 10-0 rebuttal from the Salukis expanded their margin to 27 points, 57-30, at the 13:21 mark.
-
After the SIU lead swelled to 30 points at the under-eight media timeout, IUPUI used four points from Nevena Markovic, a bucket from Eichelberger, and an old-fashioned three-point play from Del’Niqua Bellamy to close within 70-49.
-
Down the stretch another IUPUI spurt brought the Jaguars deficit below 20 points, but it was too little too late as the Salukis picked up a 77-63 victory.
-
Markovic led IUPUI in scoring with 12 points, while Clara Mitchell pulled down a season-best nine rebounds.
-
The Jaguars turned 28 Southern Illinois turnovers into 28 points, but the Salukis doubled up the Jags in the paint, 36-18.
THE LAST TIME ...
-
With the win in its Summit League opener against North Dakota State on Nov. 30, IUPUI picked up its fourth win of the season and moved to 1-0 in the conference.
-
The four wins in November matched the Jaguars win total from the entire 2010-11 season.
-
The last time the Jaguars boasted a winning record entering December was back during the 2008-09 season, when IUPUI was 4-3 entering the final month of the calendar year.
-
That same year was the last time the Jags won their Summit League opener.
-
The Jags are in search of their fifth win of the season on Sunday, which would surpass their win total from last season.
EICHELBERGER RETURNS
-
After missing the first six games due to injury, Janna Eichelberger made her return to the court on Nov. 30 against North Dakota State.
-
Last season, Eichelberger was second on the team in scoring and rebounding, so having her come off the bench was an added boost for head coach Austin Parkinson.
-
Eichelberger scored four points in her return against NDSU, before notching her first double-digit scoring effort of the season against SDSU with 13 points.
-
Eichelberger also grabbed five boards and added two blocks and a steal against the Jackrabbits.
-
Against Southern Illinois on Dec. 8, Eichelberger scored nine points, had two boards, and added a season-best three steals.
-
In her three games since returning to the lineup, Eichelberger is averaging 8.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.3 spg, while shooting 45.0 percent from the floor (9-of-20).
WINS VS. LOSSES
-
Almost a third of the way through the season, the Jaguars four wins have come at home or on a neutral court, while four of its five losses have come on the road.
-
In its wins this season, the Jaguars are shooting 44.1 percent from the floor compared to 30.8 percent in its losses. However, the poor shooting in losses may have something to do with shot selection.
-
When subtracting 3-point attempts, IUPUI is connecting on 47.1 percent of its shots inside-the-arc in its wins compared to 34.6 percent of its attempts in losses.
-
Two other noticeable factors for IUPUI this season are its assists and rebounding.
-
Part of the reason for IUPUI’s better shooting inside the arc in wins is due to an increase in assists. In wins, IUPUI averages 15.3 assists per game compared to only 10.6 apg in losses.
-
In wins, the Jags have at least matched their opponents on the glass grabbing 36.2 rpg against 35.8 rpg.
-
However, in losses the Jaguars are being outrebounded, 47.2 to 32.6. (-14.6 margin).
DEFENSE IS THE BEST OFFENSE
-
One of the keys to IUPUI’s second-half comeback win over North Dakota State on Nov. 30 was its ability to get out into transition and score.
-
The Jaguars outscored the Bison 10-0 in fast break points on the game, proving to be the difference.
-
On the season, IUPUI has outscored its opponents in fast break points seven times and has scored eight or more fast break points five times.
-
Unfortunately for IUPUI, the trend was reversed against Southern Illinois as the Salukis outscored the Jaguars, 17-6 in fastbreak points leading to a 77-63 win for SIU on Dec. 8.
-
The Jags average 7.5 fast break points per game compared to 5.8 for their opponents.
FACILITATING THE OFFENSE
-
Emily Phillips is in her first season with IUPUI after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.
-
As the team’s point guard, Phillips struggled taking care of the ball committing 18 turnovers while dishing out just 11 assists in the team’s first four games.
-
However, over the last five games that trend has gone through a 180-degree transformation.
-
Since taking on Kansas, Phillips has posted 21 assists compared to just nine turnovers, including dishing out a season-high eight assists against three turnovers in the team’s last outing against South Dakota State.
-
On the season, she now owns an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.18 and leads the team in assists averaging 3.5 apg.
STEADY SPARK
-
In the first nine games of her career, Nevena Markovic has been a consistent scoring option for the Jaguars.
-
In her collegiate debut, she came off the bench and scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the first half against the nationally-ranked Boilermakers on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown.
-
The Wheaton, Ill.-native accounted for half of the Jags first-half point total as they trailed then-No. 21 Purdue 28-22 at the half and her 14 points were the most points scored by a freshman in her debut since Janna Eichelberger scored 15 points in her first game against Northern Illinois on Nov. 14, 2008.
-
Markovic has scored in double-figures seven times this season, including twice in the BTI Classic.
-
In the BTI Classic opener, she scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds en route to her first career double-double.
-
In her Summit League-debut, Markovic carried the Jags in the first half scoring eight of her 11 points in the opening 20 minutes before her teammates rallied to her side in the second half to pick up the win.
-
Entering Sunday’s game against Indiana, Markovic has scored in double figures in four straight games.
-
On the season she is third on the team in scoring averaging 10.7 ppg, while shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three.
-
In addition to her scoring, Markovic is tied for the team lead in rebounding pulling down 5.8 rpg, while leading the squad with 15 blocks.
