MILWAUKEE – The IUPUI men’s tennis team traveled up to Milwaukee to meet BIG EAST foe Marquette and the Jaguars had several matches go to the wire, but the Jaguars fell just short to the Golden Eagles, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

While the 5-2 score may appear like a decisive win, the Jaguars lost a tight doubles point and lost a No. 6 singles decision in a tiebreaker, which if reversed would have turned the outcome in IUPUI’s favor.

Despite the loss against Marquette, IUPUI played strong throughout the lineup and look to carry their impressive play against the Golden Eagles into Sunday’s match against Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Both of IUPUI’s points came from Nick Volz and Joel Modesitt in No. 2 and No. 4 singles play, respectively. Volz dropped the opening set to Jose Manuel Munoz, 6-2, but fought back to win a close second set, 7-6. In the tiebreaker to determine a winner, Volz won the race to 10 downing Munoz, 10-6.

Just like Volz, Modesitt used three sets to defeat his opponent. However, Modesitt won the first set, 6-3, before falling, 7-6. Despite the second-set loss, Modesitt was able to regroup and win a tight tiebreaker, 13-11. That was not the only win on the day for Modesitt as he and Volz also teamed up to win in No. 3 doubles action, 8-6.

In No. 1 doubles play, Joe Hammond and Bren Vasalakis fell 8-4, and Ivan Mojsejev and Dan Klingenberg fell just short in a 9-7 defeat in No. 2 doubles as Marquette escaped with the doubles point.

In singles matches, Mojsejev and Chase Emerson lost in the No. 1 and No. 5 spots, respectively, by identical 6-3, 6-4, scores.

Klingenberg and Vasalakis played in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, with Klingenberg falling in straight sets and Vasalakis having his comeback come up short in a tiebreaker.

The men’s team resumes action on Sunday, Jan. 30, against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
