Steurer, Bourgeois, and McGowan were double-event winners for IUPUI

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Following a pair of losses at Eastern Illinois on Friday, the IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both bounced back with victories at Valparaiso on Saturday.
The men’s team used seven individual wins and a relay win to down the Crusaders, 116-88, while the women’s team used five individual triumphs and a relay victory to eke out a 110-94 win.

Three of the men’s seven individual triumphs came in the freestyle events with Michael Steurer sweeping the 100 and 200 freestyle in addition to Steven Bretscher claiming the top spot in the 1000 freestyle.

Tyler McGowan joined Steurer as a double-event winner taking first-place honors in both the 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly with times of 2:01.04 and 1:59.77, respectively.

The two other victories came from Hunter Chiasson and Andrew Heideman in the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively.

Finally, the 400 freestyle relay quartet of Steurer, Luke Green, Josh Davis, and Andrew Saunders claimed victory touching the wall in 3:20.98 to close out the meet.

On the women’s side, Lizzie Bourgeois was the lone dual event winner earning wins in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. Bourgeois’ time of 1:58.92 in the 200 freestyle moved her into 13th place in school history.

The top individual performance of the night came courtesy of Katelyn Cato, whose winning time of 2:10.39 in the 200 backstroke was not only a personal best, but it was the fourth-best time in school history.

The other athlete who moved into the top 10 in the record books was Brittany Broyer. Her win in the 1000 freestyle, which clocked in at 11:05.03, cemented her into ninth in the IUPUI record books.

The final individual win came courtesy of Lindsey Hurst in the 50 freestyle. Her time of 25.16 led a 1-2-3 victory for the Jags in the event, proving to be one of the key events en route to the victory.

In the relays, the Jags secured their top time of the evening. The team of Cato, Tori Taylor, Bourgeois, and Hurst collectively timed in at 4:05.18 in the 400 medley relay moving them into third place on IUPUI’s all-time list.

The Jaguars return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on Rose-Hulman and Butler in a tri-meet, which will be IUPUI’s final meet before hosting the Summit League Championships Feb. 16-19 at the IU Natatorium.
