LEMONT, Ill. - The IUPUI men's golf team continued its climb up the leaderboard and finished on top of the John Dallio Memorial at Ruffled Feathers G.C.. IUPUI finished the event, hosted by DePaul, at 890 following Sunday's final round 296. Junior
Ben Engle earned his first career medalist honor with a two-day total of 214 (74-70-70) to finish at two-under.
The tourney win was the team's first since March 2009 when it claimed the Butler Spring Invitational title.
"I knew it was going to be close," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "(Florida Gulf Coast) knew our score so we knew it was going to come down to the last couple of holes. I think our guys stayed focused and did really well adapting to the weather changes.
"We just kept moving up and up and up. I think this is going to give us a lot of confidence, espeically coming from way behind."
The Jaguars were sitting in last place at the turn of the first round, but rallied to climb to seventh at the conclusion of the opening round. By the start of Sunday's round, the Jaguars had rallied up to fourth place and were seven shots behind Florida Gulf Coast.
Engle spearheaded the ascent by winning the tournament by four shots. He was the only person among the 73-player field to break par after 54 holes.
"The par fives were set up to score and I was hitting my irons well," Engle said. "I was making birdies on the par fives and even scoring well on the par threes, which is unusual for me.
"I had a lot of good par saves too. I hit a lot of putts from 10 to 12 feet."
Junior
Michael Powell matched Engle's effort on Sunday, firing a final round 70 (-2) to end the tournament at 219 (77-72-70). He closed tied for fourth.
"Obviously, Engle and Powell played really well all weekend, aside from their starts," Andrews said.
Senior
Ben Moster tied for 22nd at 228 (75-71-82) and junior
Michael Davan tied for 24th at 229 (82-73-74). Freshman
Jose Pablo Segurola rounded out the lineup at 243 (82-78-83).
"Jose didn't play like the player I've seen over the first month of the season," Andrews said. "The golf course just never fit Jose's eye."
Fellow rookie
Juan Diego Plasencia performer well as an individual, carding a two-day 226 (72-76-78) to tie for 14th.
"I think this gives us a lot of confidence," Engle said. "When coach tells us to do something, we showed we can do it."
Andrews challenged his team to get back to even after the rough start. The Jaguars were 20 over through nine holes and just 26 over after 54 holes.
"The guys stayed focused on trying to pass teams," Andrews said.
The Jaguars' fall slate will continue on Oct. 4-5 when they compete in the Butler Fall Invitational at Eagle Creek on the city's west side.
