SHREVEPORT, La. -- Hitting at a .314 clip, the IUPUI volleyball team split their opening weekend of Summit League play, defeating Centenary, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Centenary Fitness Center.
Lindsey Weber had 14 kills to pace the Jaguars in the 25-21, 25-19, 25-8 sweep.
A day after traveling from Tulsa, Okla., to Shreveport, IUPUI (2-9, 1-1 Summit) was slow out of the gate. falling behind, 6-3, before knotting the opening set at 10 on a Weber kill. Trading points to 14, the Jaguars snapped the deadlock with kills from
Alexis Meeks, Weber and a block by
Jessica Phelps and Weber to open a 17-14 lead.
Centenary (3-6, 0-2 Summit) closed to within a point at 20-19, but Weber and
Dana Gardner teed up kills on consecutive points to reopen the three-point advantage. From there, a
Brittany Anglemyer and Gardner blcok, followed by a Gardner kill closed the match and gave IUPUI the first-set win.
Finding their legs, the Jaguars came out strong in the second set, reeling off three straight points to snap a 7-7 tie; Anglemyer got the run started with a kill off a Meeks set and followed up the kill with an ace. Weber and Meeks added kills to complete a 4-0 run and put the Jags up, 11-7.
The Jaguars were able to hold the advantage throughout the middle of the set, allowing the Ladies to tie the match at 17, but never surrendering the lead. A Centenary ball handling error gave the Jags the lead back at 18-17 and Anglemyer added another kill to put IUPUI up two, 19-17.
Anglemyer,
Kalyse Reimbold and Meeks were given credit for a block on the next point, putting IUPUI ahead, 20-17. Another kill by Anglemyer made it 22-18 and forced Centenary into a timeout.
The break did little to stop the IUPUI momentum, as a Meeks block preceeded a kill by Weber, creating set point for the Jaguars. It was Anglemyer who closed the set with her fifth kill of set, stuffing a Meeks feed to put IUPUI up two sets to none.
Having built momentum through the first two sets, the Jaguars wasted no time in putting Centenary away in the third; four straight points on Meeks' opening service forced an early Centenary timeout with the score 4-0 in favor of IUPUI.
The Jaguars' lead steadily grew as the set progressed, with IUPUI going through just over one rotation during the set. A
Moriah Fair kill gave the Jaguars the match point, and a Centenary attack error closed the set and match.
IUPUI will look to continue their strong play on Friday, when they host Oakland at The Jungle. The match will begin at 7 p.m. ET, with coverage on IUPUI Live!
