ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - The new look IUPUI men's golf team opened up the 2010-11 season on Saturday at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate and will go into Sunday's final round tied for ninth after a 36-hole 594 (294-300). Juniors Michael Davan and Ben Engle are currently tied for tenth of 81 golfers after carding 4-over 146's on Saturday.

"Some things were good and some things were not so good," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "It was a nice opening round for (Michael) Davan. He played really well in the morning and kind of ran out of gas in the afternoon.

"That was the story of our afternoon round and when you're playing high level competition like this, you've got to be able to finish off rounds."

Davan opened play with a one-under 70 in the morning before turning in a 76 in the afternoon round. Meanwhile, Engle went 74-72 to close at 146. Both juniors redshirted a year ago, as did fellow junior Michael Powell and senior Ben Moster. On Saturday, Powell closed at 152 (79-73) and Moster recorded a 164 (76-88).

Freshman Juan Diego Plasencia filled out the Jaguars' lineup with a 153 (74-79) in his first collegiate tournament. The former top ranked player in Mexico is tied for 55th entering Sunday's final round.

"Juan D. looked really comfortable," Andrews said. "The last time I saw a freshman look like that was when Justin Wenger was here. He looked like he was in control all day."

IUPUI was tied for fifth after the first 18, but stumbled in the afternoon to ninth. Illinois leads the 15-team field at 578 while Central Florida is second at 585. The Jaguars are currently tied with Iowa State and hold a two-shot lead over Indiana. Penn State, Kansas State and Louisville also trail the Jags going into Sunday.

"Today was the most excited I've been in a long time," Andrews said. "I was really confident that they'd play well. It was good to finally see Davan play a round for the Jaguars and it was good to get Engle and Powell back out there.

"Moster struggled today and there's no denying that, but if he comes out and shoots a 69 tomorrow, it'll be quickly forgotten."

Individually, Central Florida's Connor Arendell sits atop the leaderboard at 138 (-4) after back-to-back 69's on Saturday. Ball State's Eric Steger and Iowa State's Nathan Leary are tied for second at 143.

Moster will be the first Jaguar to tee off on Sunday as he goes out at 9:17 a.m..
