INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team dropped the doubles point for the first time in Summit League play and stumbled in singles in a 4-0 decision to UMKC at the Indianapolis Tennis Center on Saturday morning. It was the Jaguars' first Summit League defeat of the young season while UMKC improved to 2-0 with its second win in as many days in Indianapolis.
UMKC (8-6, 2-0 Summit) squeaked out the doubles point with the Jaguars lone win coming at the No. 3 spot.
Joel Modesitt and
Taylor Tunis got a service break at 4-4 and carried that to an 8-5 victory over UMKC's team of David Heckler and Abdulrahman Al-Awadhi. The No. 2 freshman tandem of
Deon Shafer and
Nick Volz was on serve trailing 8-7, but relinquished a late service break to decide the doubles point.
In singles action, UMKC was dominant at the top of the lineup, deciding the match before the lower portion of the team could take the court. Bret Berryman knocked off
Bren Vasalakis 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Serge Ristivojevic followed with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over Shafer at No. 3.
Sophomore
Dan Klingenberg showed some late life at No. 2, but fell 6-0, 6-4 as the 'Roos secured the fourth point. Freshman
Nick Volz was up a break in the first set of his match at No. 4 when the match was decided.
IUPUI (4-15, 2-1) will conclude its home cluster on Sunday when it hostsin-state foe IPFW at 1:00 p.m. at the Indianapolis Tennis Center. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
