INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team used strong doubles play and a balanced lineup to claim a 2-0 start in Summit League play on Friday morning with wins over Oral Roberts and South Dakota State inside the Indianapolis Tennis Center. IUPUI (4-14, 2-0 Summit) won the morning match with ORU 4-2 and the afternoon outcome with SDSU 4-0.
"Getting the doubles point was huge in both matches," IUPUI Head Coach
Brandon Currie said. "We were able to set the tone in both matches by scoring the doubles point.
"From there, it really carried over into singles play."
In the morning, Currie's team took the early momentum, winning the doubles point with
Nick Volz and
Deon Shafer's 8-4 win at No. 2 and
Joel Modesitt and
Taylor Tunis' easy 8-1 win at No. 3.
However, ORU (1-6, 0-1 Summit) quickly regained traction in singles, getting easy victories at the top two spots to take a 2-1 lead. From there, it was all Jaguars as Shafer grinded out a hard fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over ORU's Dmitry Suslov. Volz used a late second set service break to win 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4 singles and Modesitt posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Matthew Tansil at No. 5.
Senior
Jorge Yunes was well on his way to victory at No. 6 when the match was stopped.
After a brief respite, the Jaguars came back in the afternoon with a vengeance, winning its second doubles point of the day, this time bettering the Jackrabbits. After all three doubles matches were tied at 3-3 early, the bottom two tandems got hot, racing to 8-4 wins to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Yunes was the first singles player to score, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Evan Sims at the No. 6 position. Shafer won his match about 20 minutes later, 6-1, 6-0 and Modesitt sealed the day's second league win moments later with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5.
"This was big for us," Currie said. "We struggled in the non-conference, so getting these early wins is tremendous for us."
IUPUI will return to action on Saturday when it hosts UMKC at 9:00 a.m. at the tennis center.
