MEN'S TENNIS GOES 1-2 ON WEEKEND

Joel Modesitt goes 2-0 in singles play

DAYTON, Ohio -- Playing three matches in just under 72 hours, the IUPUI men's tennis team went 1-2, recording a 4-1 win over Chicago State in between losses to Dayton and Wright State.  

Joel Modesitt went 2-0 in singles for IUPUI (2-14), recording a straight-set win against Chicago State and followed it up with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Wright State's Jan Alafriz on Sunday.  Modesitt's match against Bryce Warnock of Dayton was not finished.

Playing at the Indianapolis Tennis Center on Friday, the Jaguars claimed the doubles point in their 4-1 loss to Dayton; Jorge Yunes and Bren Vasalakis took their match at No. 1, 8-6, while Nick Volz and Deon Shafer gave the Jaguars the point with an 8-3 win at No. 2.

Forgoing doubles play against Chicago State, the Jaguars claimed five of six singles matches to claim the 5-1 victory.

Less than 24 hours later, IUPUI fell 4-3 to Wright State after picking up the doubles point.  This time it was Deon Shafer and Nick Volz who combined to win at No. 1 doubles, getting past Wright State's Mihkel Kruusmagi and Nick Camilleri, 9-8.  Taylor Tunis and Modesitt followed with a win at No. 2, 9-7, to give the Jags a 1-0 lead.

Volz continued his strong play, recording a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 to hand IUPUI their second point of the match; Modesitt improved to 2-0 on the weekend after his victory at No. 5.

However, Wright State (7-4) took wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 6 to claim the victory.

The Jaguars will be back in action on March 26, when they host a Summit League cluster at the Indianapolis Tennis Center.  IUPUI will host Oral Roberts, South Dakota State, UMKC and IPFW; the Jaguars will kick off the cluster when they meet ORU at 9 a.m. on the 26th.
