EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Three breaks. That was the difference between victory and defeat for the IUPUI men's tennis team on Sunday, as they fell to SIU-Edwardsville, 4-3, at the Edwardsville YMCA.
IUPUI (1-8) narrowly dropped the doubles point, as they lost at No. 1 and No. 2 by a single break apiece. At No. 1,
Jorge Yunes and
Bren Vasalakis fell, 8-6, to the Cougars' Paulo Gonzalez and Mike Chamberlain.
After
Joel Modesitt and
Taylor Tunis rolled past their competition with an 8-3 win at No. 3,
Deon Shafer and
Nick Volz lost by a break at No. 2, 9-7, giving SIU-Edwardsville the early lead.
SIU-Edwardsville (1-5) cruised to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but Volz and Modesitt brought the Jaguars within a point with victories at No. 3 and No. 4. Volz breezed to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Devan Faulkenberg, while Modesitt easily took his first set, 6-2, before winning the second in a tie-break, 7-6(3).
Tunis evened the match with a win at No. 6, taking down Dylan Reed in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
With the match tied, Yunes had a chance to claim the victory at No. 5, taking an early lead with a 6-1 first-set win. However, Carlos Sanchez rallied to take the second, 6-3, and Yunes fell by a break in the third, 7-5.
IUPUI will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 27, when they head to Muncie, Ind., to meet Ball State. The matches will begin at 12:00 p.m. ET.
