INDIANAPOLIS – For the second consecutive game, the IUPUI women’s basketball team dished out over 20 assists and
Janna Eichelberger registered her first double-double of the season, giving the Jaguars a dominating 74-46 win over Centenary College Monday evening at The Jungle.
Eichelberger scored a career-high 21 points and snatched 13 rebounds to lead IUPUI to the win, improving its overall record to 2-6 and evening its Summit League mark at 1-1.
“Janna had her best game as a Jaguar tonight,” said head coach
Austin Parkinson. “She had a complete game scoring and rebounding and she stepped up when we needed her.”
“Offensively we haven’t quite been able to limit our turnovers, but we are starting to share the ball well which created some easy baskets for us tonight,” Parkinson added.
The first half consisted of five runs, three of which coming from the Jaguars.
Two lay-ups apiece by
Kerah Nelson and
Demetria Nunley-Lash immediately lifted IUPUI to an 8-0 lead just two minutes in, but a 13-0 response from Centenary put the Jags five points behind, 13-8, with 15:02 on the clock.
Over the next 8:30, the Jaguars clamped down on defense and got the ball in the paint resulting in an 18-3 surge, including 10 straight points by Eichelberger that catapulted IUPUI back in front, 27-16, with 6:28 to play.
Just as the Jags looked to have a comfortable lead, a quick 7-0 run by Centenary cut the IUPUI lead to 27-23 with 3:28 on the clock, but the Jaguars used a 9-0 run over the final 2:31, which was capped off by a
Shea Collins 3-pointer, giving IUPUI a 36-23 halftime advantage.
The 36-23 IUPUI lead at intermission was the Jaguars first halftime lead this season and 26 of the 36 points came in the paint.
The runs continued in the second half as a 12-0 run to start the second 20 minutes by the Jaguars widened their lead to 48-23, just 3:20 in.
The Ladies cut the IUPUI advantage to 15 points, 57-42, with 6:53 to play, but that was as close as Centenary got and the Jags cruised to a 74-46 win.
The Jaguars’ bench collectively outscored the Ladies’ bench 41-3 and dominated the paint, outscoring Centenary 46-10 in the lane.
Gretchen Gaskin methodically chipped in 14 points, while
Dawn Luster scored seven points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out a career-high six assists.
“Everybody contributed tonight and played with energy. Shea (Collins) hit some three’s, Dawn had a good all-around game, and the whole team played hard,” Parkinson said.
IUPUI closes out its three-game homestand on Friday, Dec. 10, when the Jags welcome Southern Illinois to The Jungle for a 7 p.m. tip. Scott Taylor and Brykeesha Tate will have the call on www.IUPUIJags.com.
