INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI closes out its three-game homestand when it hosts IU-Southeast at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at The Jungle. The Jaguars are 0-2 on the homestand after falling to Wright State on Nov. 12 and Akron on Nov. 17. IUPUI is 19-1 all-time against IU-Southeast.
UP NEXT
· Following Tuesday’s game, IUPUI will head to Notre Dame, Ind., to compete in the 2010 WBCA Classic.
· The WBCA Classic is a four-team, round-robin tournament consisting of Notre Dame, Butler, Wake Forest, and IUPUI.
· IUPUI opens the tournament on Friday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m., against No. 12 Notre Dame, before taking on Butler on Saturday, Nov. 27 and Wake Forest on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m. and Noon, respectively.
LAST TIME OUT ...
· Kerah Nelson scored a team-high 11 points and dished out a career-high five assists, but the IUPUI women’s basketball team fell to Akron, 70-49, on Wednesday Nov. 17.
· For the second straight game, the Jaguars struggled from the floor hitting 34.0 percent (18-of-53) of their shots, compared to the Zips connecting on 48.3 percent (28-of-53) of their attempts.
· Akron outscored IUPUI 36-22 in the paint and converted 23 Jaguar turnovers into 20 points.
· IUPUI fell behind mid-way through the first half hitting just one field goal over a 10-minute stretch resulting in a 19-5 Zips run that reversed a two-point IUPUI advantage into a 12-point deficit, 24-12, at the under-eight-minute media timeout.
· Trailing by double figures, IUPUI used a pair of
Janna Eichelberger buckets coupled with a
Shea Collins three-pointer to go on a 7-1 surge, cutting its deficit to single-digits at 30-21.
· However, that was as close as the Jaguars got as a 16-6 Akron spurt widened its lead to 55-34 at the mid-way point of the second half.
· In the final 10 minutes, Nelson scored eight of the Jaguars 15 points and IUPUI matched Akron basket for basket, but the Zips left The Jungle with a 70-49 win.
ABOUT IU-SOUTHEAST
· The Grenadiers come into the week with a 3-3 overall record after registering wins over Miami-Middletown and Northwestern Ohio last week.
· IUS is No. 20 in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll.
· The Grenadiers are led offensively by Ashmere Woods, who is averaging 17.7 ppg over the last three games, highlighted by a 19-point effort in their last game against Northwestern Ohio.
ALL-AROUND GAME
· Named a preseason second-team all-conference selection prior to the start of the season,
Kerah Nelson has not had the start she wanted over IUPUI’s first two games.
· Nelson was held to nine points in the opener and posted 11 in a loss to Akron on 3-of-15 shooting (20.0 percent).
· Last season, Nelson shot below 30.0 percent from the floor in three games.
· When she shot below 30.0 percent, Nelson averaged 7.0 rebounds per game, 1.0 assist per game, and 0.67 steals per game.
· Despite the poor shooting performance against Akron, Nelson raised the other parts of her game to help the squad.
· Against the Zips, Nelson pulled down seven rebounds, got her teammates involved by dishing out a career-high five assists, and notched two steals and a block.
POST PRESENCE
· Clara Mitchell has been steady in the paint for IUPUI in its first two games.
· Against Wright State and Akron, Mitchell averaged 10.0 points per game, 5.0 rebounds per game, and shot 60.0 percent from the field.
· Mitchell’s 11 points against Wright State on Nov. 12 was her third double-digit scoring performance of her career.
· She followed that up with nine points and eight rebounds against Akron on Nov. 17.
· Mitchell was a presence on the offensive end as four of her eight rebounds were offensive, accounting for more than a third of the team’s offensive rebounds.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
· Turnovers were the Achilles heel for IUPUI during the 2009-10 season.
· The Jaguars averaged 23.4 turnovers per game last season compared to 17.2 for its opponents and had fewer turnovers than its opponents in just six of 29 games.
· In the season opener against Wright State on Nov. 12, IUPUI showed an improvement in its ball security turning the ball over 18 times, while forcing the Raiders into 21 turnovers.
· Only once during the 2009-10 season did the Jaguars force their opponent to more than 20 turnovers while committing fewer than 20 turnovers (Jan. 16, 2010 vs. Centenary).
