JAGUARS HOP PAST KANGAROOS IN FIVE-SET THRILLER

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS - After losing a two-set lead, it looked like IUPUI would allow history to repeat itself for UMKC, who lost the first two sets against Western Illinois and came back to win the final three sets to take the match, but the Jaguars battled back to take the fifth set and the match (25-23, 25-19, 31-33, 25-11, 15-6).

After having the wheels come completely off in the fourth set, IUPUI (6-16, 5-6 Summit League) rattled off seven straight points to take the fifth set 15-6 and avoid an improbable comeback by the Kangaroos. IUPUI took advantage of five errors during the run. Dana Gardner blasted two balls home to account for the other two points on the run, which ended the match. In the midst of the long run, Brittany Anglemyer and Lauran Thompson had a key block to keep the momentum swung in IUPUI's direction.

The Jaguars looked like a completely different team just a set earlier. IUPUI committed 11 attack errors in the set, including a stretch where the Jaguars gift wrapped seven consecutive points with attack errors.

The momentum swing from losing an extremely wild third set may have been what caused IUPUI's bad play in the fourth set. After fighting off a set point which tied the third set at 24, IUPUI had a chance to put the match away, but a kill by UMKC's Holly Schmidt kept the Kangaroos alive. The Jaguars fought off four consecutive set points with the help of kills from Bethany Fogler, Moriah Fair and Anglemyer.

A blast by Kalyse Reimbold gave the Jaguars another opportunity to close the match but Ella Meier came right back with a kill of her own to even the score at 31. The Kangaroos captured the next two points and the set on consecutive IUPUI errors. There were eight total set points in the third set.

IUPUI started off the match on the right foot, jumping out to a 9-3 lead on the first set. The Jaguars relinquished the first-set lead via a 7-1 run by the Kangaroos. After a Jaguar ball handling error tied the set at 21, IUPUI head coach Steve Payne called timeout and whatever he shared with his team, worked out. Anglemyer and Fogler had consecutive kills to lead a 4-0 run which closed the set.

Fair had five of her team-high 13 kills in the second set which helped IUPUI to a 25-19 win. Anglemyer finished with five block assists and two solo blocks. Shari Bernhardt led the squad with 30 digs. Reimbold and Fogler also reached double-digit kills with 11.

IUPUI will play next on Friday Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. at South Dakota State.
