FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A better effort sustained the IUPUI women's basketball team for a half. But a 19-point second half doomed the Jaguars to a 61-49 defeat against IPFW on Monday night at the Gates Sports Center. The loss was the eighth in a row for the Jaguars, setting a new single-season record.
IUPUI (1-14, 0-4 Summit) led by as much as four points in the first, overcoming an early eight-point deficit with a 12-0 run, building a 16-14 lead with 9:25 to play on a layup by
Kerah Nelson. A three-pointer by
Briannica Tye and two Nelson free throws pushed the Jaguar advantage to 23-19 with just over five minutes to play in the half.
Nelson finished the game with a team-high 17 points. No other Jaguar went above 9 points in the contest, led by
Elizabeth Mercer's career-high 9.
However, the Jaguars went cold from the floor, knocking down just two field goals the rest of the half as IPFW (5-8, 3-0 Summit) took a 33-30 lead into the locker room.
IUPUI would close within a single point on two occasions early in the second half - on a layup by Nelson and a three pointer from Mercer, but the Mastodons quickly responded to the latter with a 14-2 spurt, assuming a 50-37 lead after a jumper from Stephanie Rosado.
Rosado led all players with 26 points, dominating the interior on 9-for-16 shooting and an 8-for-8 effort from the free-throw line.
The Jaguars would not come within double digits the rest of the way.
IUPUI will return to The Jungle for their next matchup, against Western Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET with coverage available on IUPUIJags.com.
