NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The IUPUI men's tennis team met their second nationally-ranked opponent in three matches, falling to #30 Notre Dame, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. On Friday night, the Jaguars kicked off the weekend in their home opener, dropping a 6-1 decision to Morehead State.
Against Morehead State, the Jaguars had a chance to take the doubles point after
Nick Volz and
Deon Shafer routed their opposition at No. 2, 8-1. However, IUPUI (0-3) narrowly lost matches at No. 1 and No. 3, each by an identical 8-5 margin.
In singles play, the Eagles controlled the action, winning five of six matches.
Joel Modesitt won his first career match at No. 6, rallying to beat MSU's Lovell Mecalf, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Daniel Klingenberg rallied to force a third set, but fell, 4-6, in the third;
Jorge Yunes was forced to a third set at No. 4 singles but was not able to hang on for the win, falling, 6-4, 3-6, 1-6.
The Jaguars met #30 Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon, and mixed up their singles lineup, as Modesitt moved up to No. 4 singles with
Malcolm Peace debuting at No. 5. Modesitt and Klingenberg each fell by two breaks, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 and No. 2, respectively.
IUPUI will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when the head to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on Marquette and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
