KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Between the missed opportunities to take control of the game in the first half and giving UMKC 10 extra possessions, it was a frustrating afternoon for the IUPUI women's basketball team, one that ultimately resulted in a 65-36 loss at Municipal Auditorium on Saturday.

In a first half in which IUPUI (2-17, 1-7 Summit) and UMKC (9-10, 6-2 Summit) seemed determined to recreate one of the 1940 NCAA national semifinals, which were the first of nine to be held at the venerable Municipal Auditorium (Indiana defeated Duquense, 39-30), the Jaguars had nine chances to tie or take the lead but capitalized on just one.

A Janna Eichelberger gave the Jaguars the brief 9-8 lead at the 10:48 mark of the first, as the Jaguars cashed in on their seventh chance to tie or take the lead; IUPUI had missed six free throws and committed a turnover in their previous four trips down the court.

Still, IUPUI's defense gave them a fighting chance when their offense was struggling.  Though the Jags knocked down just 5-of-19 attempts in the opening half, they managed to force 9 Kangaroo turnovers and hold UMKC to 33.3-percent shooting.

"It's frustrating," IUPUI head coach Shann Hart said.  "We put ourselves in position to take control of the game early and we couldn't capitalize on it."

Down just five at the break, 22-17, the Jaguars came alive briefly in the second half, as Gretchen Gaskin followed an Ebony Davis jumper and drove the right side of the lane, laying the ball in while being fouled.  Gaskin's ensuing free throw completed a three-point play and brough IUPUI within two, 24-22, just one minute into the second half.

However, the Jaguars went cold - knocking down just one two buckets over the next seven minutes.  By the time Alyse Poindexter grabbed an offensive board and got the subsequent putback, the Jags were down 12, 40-28, with 10:56 to go.

IUPUI would hit just two more field goals the rest of the way, and the Kangaroos began to get out in transition after missed buckets, leading by as much as 29 points in the second half.  UMKC point guard LeAndrea Thomas led the charge, scoring 14 of her 16 points over the game's 20 minutes.

Chazny Morris matched Thomas' output, while Kerah Nelson was the lone Jaguar in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

IUPUI, who controlled the paint, had just 20 points in the paint on account of their 11-for-43 effort from the field.  However, UMKC dominated the boards, pulling down 47 rebounds, 18 of which came on the offensive end of the court.  the 'Roos had 15 second-chance points off those caroms.

The Jaguars will wrap up their road trip when they head to Cedar City, Utah, for a meeting with Southern Utah on Monday.  Tip-off from the Centrum Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT (9 p.m. ET), with Scott Taylor on the call on IUPUIJags.com.
