BROOKINGS, S.D. -- A night after hitting .111 in a three-set loss, the IUPUI volleyball team struggled to generate offense for a second straight evening, attacking at a .096 clip in a 3-1 loss to South Dakota State Saturday night at Frost Arena.  The Jaguars did not have a player eclipse 10 kills in the 15-25, 15-25, 25-14, 13-25 loss.

IUPUI (10-4, 3-2 Summit) played well defensively, coming away with 58 digs on the evening; however, 34 kills doomed the Jaguars' effort.  South Dakota State (5-8, 4-2 Summit) turned in a .220 hitting percentage and 73 digs to stymie IUPUI throughout the night.

Danielle Goodnight turned in her second consecutive double-double on the weekend, finishing with 29 assists and 14 digs.  Shari Bernhardt led all players with 21 digs.

Unlike Friday night, when the Jaguars routinely fell behind to start a set, IUPUI was able to trade points with the Jackrabbits early in the opening set on Saturday.  It was the Jacks' rotation with Ellyce Youngren on serve that put the Jags on their heels.

Trailing by three points at 7-4, Youngren's serve boosted SDSU's lead to eight at 12-4; two aces aided the ffort.  However, the Jaguars rallied, using four Jackrabbits errors and a block by Ashley Johnson and Dane Gardner to pull withing 14-8 and force a SDSU timeout.

IUPUI was able to stay within striking distance, closing within five points before Youngren's serve again gave the Jaguars fits.  A 5-0 run helped SDSU take a 24-14 lead and close out the set.

Again, the Jags were able to trade points with South Dakota State throughout the second set, getting kills from Johnson and Gardner to force the Jackrabbits into a timeout with the score 11-10.

After Goodnight and Monica Suding came up with a block to make it 14-13, however, a quick 3-0 run by the Jacks gave them a four-point lead and forced IUPUI to burn a timeout.  Six points later the Jags took their second timeout of the set after SDSU outscored the Jaguars, 4-2, over the span.

Leading 21-15, the Jacks closed out the set with four straight points.

Down two sets to none, IUPUI refused to go away quietly, jumping all over the Jackrabbits in the third set.  The Jaguars hit .353 for the set, holding SDSU to a 36-percent sideout percentage in the set.

Kills by Lauran Thompson and Suding got IUPUI rolling in the set, and a kill by Gardner helped force South Dakota State into taking an early timeout.  The Jags kept their momentum rolling after the timeout, building a seven-point lead midway through the set after a Lindsey Weber kill and a SDSU attack error.

When the Jacks closed with four points at 15-11, IUPUI responded immediately, as Gardner and Suding came up with back-to-back kills to push the lead back to six; Goodnight and Suding came up with kills to make it a 19-12 IUPUI lead and force SDSU into their second timeout of the set.

Kills from Weber and two from Johnson helped the Jaguars close the set with a resounding 25-14 victory and seemingly give IUPUI momentum heading into the fourth set.

Unfortunately, the break between sets helped South Dakota State regroup, as the Jacks opened the match with a 7-3 run, forcing IUPUI into an early timeout.  Though the Jaguars would close within five points midway through the set on a Thompson kill, the Jacks slowly pulled away, finishing the set and match on a 10-4 run.

IUPUI will look to snap their two-match skid when they travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for a match against Indiana State on Tuesday, Sept. 30.  The match will begin at 7 p.m. ET.
