EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Sophomore goalkeeper
Tyler Keever hauled in a career-high 12 saves and senior forward
Eric Weigman netted his first goal of the season as the Jaguars managed a 1-1 double overtime tie with Eastern Illinois at the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic at Black Beauty Field on Sunday.
Weigman tallied in the 76th minute to pull IUPUI (1-4-2) back even after Eastern Illinois' Mike Picinich had given the Panthers an early lead. Kyle Bullock crossed a ball to Picinich, who scored from inside the IUPUI six-yard box in the game's 17th minute.
"It was definitely a tale of two halves. We stunk the joint out in the first half," Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "I had to empty the bench because the guys on the field weren't getting it done.
"The second half was much better."
As Keever continued to keep IUPUI in the game defensively, Weigman provided life offensively in the 76th minute when he scored his 14th career goal. The Wisconsin-native corralled a loose ball deep in EIU (2-2-2) territory and ran through a pair of defenders before slotting a shot past EIU's Sean Molony.
"It was just a great individual effort on Wiggy's part," Franklin said.
Both teams had numerous chances down the stretch to claim victory, but neither could capitalize.
EIU had a penalty kick with under two minutes left but Jeff Kupiec had his shot stopped by the IUPUI goalkeeper. In the first OT, EIU's Alex Harrison had a shot hit off the crossbar while IUPUI's
Caleb Lindemann also had a golden chance for a goal.
In the final 10 minutes,
Perez Agaba had a chip from point blank sail over the crossbar as the Jaguars had eight attempts in the final period. IUPUI outshot EIU 22-20 led by Lindemann's seven attempts.
Sunday's match was IUPUI's fourth overtime affair among the first seven contests of the season. Three of the Jaguars' four losses have come by a single goal.
"We just can't find a way to win right now," a frustrated Franklin said afterwards. "The boys are still playing hard and working hard, so it's not a matter of effort."
Following the tournament, Keever and freshman defender
Michael Wignot were both named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the event.
IUPUI will travel to Ohio State on Wednesday before opening Summit League play on Saturday night against UMKC at Kuntz Stadium. That match will kick off at 7:00 p.m..
