SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Seeking a return to The Summit League Tournament Championship, the IUPUI women's basketball team will have to go through #14/17 South Dakota State. Tip-off from the Sioux Falls Arena is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST, and fans can catch the game live via IUPUIJags.com.
IUPUI (16-14) squeaked past IPFW in Sunday's quarterfinal matchup, 61-59, on two free throws by
Nicole James with 3.9 second left in the game. On the other hand, South Dakota State (29-2) dominated two-time defending league champion Oral Roberts, 77-49, on Saturday.
All time, the Jaguars are 0-8 against nationally ranked teams, and are 0-4 against South Dakota State since the Jackrabbits joined The Summit League last season.
However, both teams bring impressive credentials into the game. While SDSU boats The Summit League Player of the Year in Jennifer Warkenthien and the Sixth Woman of the Year in Jill Young, the Jaguars can counter with six-time first team honoree
Jernisha Cann and three-time first team selection
Julia Whitted.
Both Cann and Whitted will be seeking a slice of history on Monday; for Cann, six rebounds will make her The Summit League's all-time leading rebounder. Whitted needs just 2 points to become the 19th IUPUI women's basketball player with 1,000 career points.
And while SDSU holds the nation's second-best winning percentage this season, IUPUI head coach Shann Hart is looking forward to the matchup: "We were hoping to get the Jacks. We are always hoping for this game and this challenge, Hart said. "Obviously in this kind of atmosphere, I appreciate of the fact that you guys are very supportive of women’s basketball, keep that support for the Jacks. More importantly for us, we are accustomed to playing in crowds like this nature. We played a very strenuous schedule, non-conference. We are accustomed playing in front of 10,000; we went to Iowa State [in 2005], played [Purdue], Cincinnati. We played a tough non-conference schedule.”
