MACOMB, Ill. -- Picked to finish fourth in The Summit League Preseason Poll, the IUPUI women's basketball team will look to fulfill the prediction when they take on Western Illinois on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT from Waste Management Court at Western Hall.
A Jaguar win will lock up the fourth seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament. IUPUI (14-14, 9-8 Summit) holds a 1.5 game lead over UMKC for fourth, while Western Illinois (9-19, 7-10 Summit) sits two games behind the Jags. Regardless of Saturday's result, IUPUI will be playing in the 4-5 seed game which will be played on Sunday, March 8.
IUPUI's recent history in Macomb, Ill., is not good, as the Jaguars are 1-9 all-time at Western Hall. The lone Jaguar win on Waste Management Court came on Feb. 13, 1999, when IUPUI escaped with a 73-71 victory over the Westerwinds.
The teams have met once already this season: on Dec. 6, 2008, the Jaguars won, 67-38, over the Westerwinds, holding WIU without a field goal for an 18:40 stretch, the longest defensive stand at the Division I level this season.
Still,
Jernisha Cann will lead the Jaguars in their regular season finale. Cann, who struggled for almost a month after injuring herself in early January, brings a streak of three straight double-doubles into Saturday's game. The senior had game-highs of 18 points and 15 rebounds in the Jags' 61-56 loss to IPFW on Monday.
With 50 double-doubles, Cann has set the school record for double-doubles; she already holds the school records for rebounds (1,145) and steals (320). With 23 more boards, Cann will take over first place on The Summit League career rebounding ledger.
A win for the Jaguars would clinch their second straight season at .500 or better - something that has never happened in IUPUI's Division I history. With a 9-8 conference mark, the Jags will finish at .500 or better in Summit League play for the fourth straight season - also their best run in their Division I history.
Western Illinois enters Saturday's game trying to move up to fifth in the final Summit League standings. The Westerwinds will also be celebrating Senior Day, in which they will honor Amanda Walker, who leads the team with 10.8 points per game.
