INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team matched the school record for most goals in a game at the Division I level as the Jaguars rolled past Marian University, 6-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Wednesday night. Sophomore sniper
Perez Agaba had two goals and an assist and senior
Eric Weigman chipped in a goal and an assist as the Jaguars won their second straight contest.
Agaba scored the game-winner in the 39th minute before the floodgates opened up for five second half IUPUI (3-10-3) goals.
"Marian has traditionally come in and given us fits," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "What Marian has always done has they've always made it very difficult to get behind them and get goals. We wanted the guys to keep with the level of intensity that we built on at the end of the Oral Roberts game. The object was to get a couple of goals and get a lead and that afforded us the opportunity to showcase our depth and rest some legs."
IUPUI had the ball in Marian's half of the field almost the entire first half, but struggled to put anything on frame in the first 25 minutes. Finally, junior
Weston Hawkins set the table for Agaba's second goal of the season by carrying the ball into the teeth of the Marian (3-13-1) defense to set up a finish from eight yards out.
"That goal changed almost everything and gave us a lot of confidence and was a result of the teamwork we showed," Agaba said. "We just wanted to seal this win up and get into the right mindset for the game on Saturday."
IUPUI wasted little time adding insurance in the second half as junior
Kyle Gentile scored in the 47th minute and Weigman followed in the 50th. Gentile drove a low-liner through traffic setup by an
Ian Munro corner kick while Weigman got a clean look courtesy of a
Caleb Lindemann assist.
Sophomore
Matt Guy added his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute when he rebounded a
Ryan Robinson attempt that was initially stopped by Marian goalkeeper James Dulhanty.
Senior captain
John Bradford earned the loudest ovation of the night by netting a penalty kick in the 74th minute for his first collegiate goal and Agaba capped the game's scoring in the 85th minute. The final goal came when Weigman hit a loose ball towards the right post where Agaba cleaned up the scraps and capped his first career multi-goal game.
Agaba led all players with five shot attempts while 16 different Jaguars tried at least shot.
"Perez got his candy and when Perez starts to score goals, we tend to do well," Franklin said. "His first goal kind of gave us a little bit of relief. It took that monkey off our back.
"The end was result was nothing that I expected. I really didn't think it was going to be that lopsided, but we've got a lot of happy kids and that's exactly what you want heading into your last two conference games."
On Wednesday, IUPUI matched the single-game school record for shot attempts (35) and set new records for assists (6) and corner kicks (17). The six goals were the most in a game since a 6-3 win over Loyola on Sept. 5, 2004 while Agaba's five points were the most by a Jaguar since
Vangel Nacovski had five against IPFW in November 2007.
Redshirt freshman
Alex Mannen recorded his first career shutout, stopping two shots in just his third career start. Dulhanty made nine saves for the Knights in almost 76 minutes before giving way to Ben Dunham. Matt Stoner was credited with two of MU's four shots on the evening.
IUPUI will complete its home schedule on Saturday when it hosts the Mastodons at 2:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. Live stats will be available at IUPUIJags.com.
