FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Looking to build a three-game winning streak, the IUPUI women's basketball team will head northeast on I-69 to take on in-state rival IPFW. Tip-off from the Hilliard Gates Sports Center is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.
IUPUI (9-9, 4-3 Summit) swept their Summit League opponents last weekend, picking up wins over Centenary and Oral Roberts to match their longest winning streak of the season. A win over IPFW (2-16, 1-6 Summit) would give the Jaguars a season-best three-game streak.
Junior
Julia Whitted has picked up her game in the last three weeks, tallying five straight double-doubles, two of which came in the absence of
Jernisha Cann. Whitted, who averaged 22.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in two meetings with the Mastodons last year, is currently averaging 14.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocks in seven Summit League contests.
After missing two games, Cann returned to the IUPUI lineup last week and promptly saw her streak of 13 straight double-doubles come to an end versus Centenary. However, Cann posted her 14th double-double of the season with an 11-point, 10-rebound effort agaisnt Oral Roberts. For the year, Cann is posting 16.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game; the senior is the only player in The Summit to average a double-double this season.
IPFW is currently struggling through a 10-game losing streak, having gone 1-7 in Fort Wayne and 1-6 at the Gates Sports Center. The Mastodons are among the country's most prolific three-point shooting teams, knocking down 8.4 three-pointers per game. The mark is fourth in the NCAA.
On Monday, Oral Roberts entered The Jungle averaging 7.1 three-pointers per game, but hit just 2-for-14 attempts from downtown.
The Mastodons have been plagued by a defense that is allowing opposing teams to shoot 46.1 percent from the field and average 70.7 points per game.
IUPUI is 5-1 all time in Fort Wayne dating back to the teams' first meeting in 1980.
