INDIANAPOLIS – Junior
Jernisha Cann moved into elite company in the IUPUI women’s basketball program, notching her 1,000
th career point as the Jaguars rolled to a record-setting 97-45 win over Centenary Monday night in The Jungle.
IUPUI (13-14, 9-6 Summit) assured at least a .500 record in Summit League play by setting season-bests in nearly every offensive category. Five players, led by
Farren Stackhouse's career-high 23 points, finished in double figures for the Jaguars to balance the stat sheet.
Capping her night with her third consecutive double-double, Cann became the 18th player in IUPUI women’s basketball history to reach 1,000 points with a layup at the 8:34 mark of the first half. The Kansas City, Mo.-native became just the fifth player to reach the 1,000-point threshold in three years, joining Julie Rotramel, Tiffany Kyser, Paulette Martin and Judy Cummings.
Finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Cann passed Cummings for 17th on the scoring list, finishing the night with 1,008 points. Cann is also 76 rebounds away from passing Kyser for the school record.
With the win, IUPUI moved into fourth place in The Summit League standings and are currently in line to receive the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament due to the ineligibility of South Dakota State and North Dakota State.
Using a 26-10 run midway through the first half, IUPUI pulled away from Centenary (3-21, 0-14 Summit) for good. Pressure defense forced 11 first-half turnovers from the Ladies, leading to 12 points.
The run was also fueled by crisp ball movement, which resulted in 16 assists on 21 field goals in the first half.
Brykeesha Tate was the main impetus behind the assists, coming away with 6 in the first half and 9 for the game.
Stackhouse had 12 points off the bench in the opening 20 minutes, exceeding her career high in just nine minutes of play. Seemingly every shot dropped for the junior, who was 10-for-14 from the field.
For the game, IUPUI shot 60.9 percent from the field, easily eclipsing their season-best mark of 53.3 percent. In going 42-for-69, the Jaguars set season-highs for field goals made and attempted. The 97 points were the Jaguars’ most since Dec. 30, 2001, when IUPUI defeated Robert Morris, 101-60.
The 52-point margin of victory was IUPUI’s best since moving to Division I and best since a 109-32 drubbing of Trinity on Dec. 9, 1988.
Every IUPUI player who appeared in the game scored, as Jessica Bennett,
Amy Cook,
Brittany Ransom and Stackhouse combined for 37 bench points, the Jaguars’ best output from the non-starters this season.
IUPUI led by as many as 55 points in the second half, with the bench coming up with 25 of the Jags’ 50 second-half points.
For the third consecutive game, Cann and
Julia Whitted each posted double-doubles. Whitted finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Christina Cunningham and
Nicole James were the other players in double-figures for IUPUI, scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively, to give the Jaguars their most players with 10 or more points in a game this season.
Anne Farrell led Centenary with 18 points.
The Jaguars will look to stay hot on the road, as they venture north to Rochester, Michigan, where they will take on the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies in a key Summit League matchup. Tipoff from the O’Rena is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. That game can be seen on SummitTV, at
