SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas -- The IUPUI women's basketball team will escape chilly Indianapolis for the weekend, taking part in the South Padre Island Shootout Friday and Saturday.  The Jaguars will open the tournament versus the Hokies of Virginia Tech with a 5:00 p.m. CT tip-off from the South Padre Island Convention Center.

IUPUI (5-4) is coming off a 67-58 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.  The Jaguars hung with the Bearcats throughout the game, getting 17 points and 10 rebounds from Jernisha Cann to go along with 15 from Nicole James and 11 from Julia Whitted.

For the season, Cann is leading the team with 18.2 points and 11.4 rebounds per game; Cann ranks 39th in the nation in scoring and 11th in rebounding.  Her 4.0 steals per game ranks fifth.

Virginia Tech (6-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 72-70 win over James Madison on Sunday.  The Hokies have played the entire season without their leading scorer, Brittany Cook, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in scoring in 2007-08.

The Hokies are among the nation's top shooting teams, hitting over 40 percent of their field-goal attempts.  Five Virginia Tech players are shooting above 40 percent, led by Utahya Drye, who is shooting 49.5 percent from the field.

IUPUI and Virginia Tech are meeting for the first time in school history; the Jaguars will be looking for their first win versus a current ACC member, having gone 0-3 in their previous meetings against Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Wake Forest.

The Jaguars will meet either SMU or Jacksonville on Saturday.
