FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Murphy's Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. On Friday night, Murphy was seemingly riding shotgun with the IUPUI men's soccer team as the Jaguars fell in their regular season finale at IPFW, 1-0 at Hefner Stadium.
The Jags dropped to 8-8-2 and 3-3 in Summit League play and IPFW improved to 3-11-3 overall and 1-3-2 in league play.
Travel issues had the Jaguars arrive 10 minutes
after their scheduled kickoff time and allowed Head Coach
Steve Franklin's team only an abbreviated pregame warmup on the field.
Once the game started, things didn't get any better for IUPUI as IPFW's Jorge Ramirez scored in the 26th minute to account for the evening's only offense. The Jaguars were outshot 19-11 overall as Ramirez led all players with five attempts.
"The overriding stat of tonight's game was the inability of our front runners to put balls in the back of the net," a frustrated Franklin said after the match. "It was definitely a game where the team was definitely not focused. We missed an opportunity tonight."
Ramirez's blast from just inside the 18-yard box blazed past IUPUI fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Francisco Maia to the near post.
Offensively, the Jaguars forced IPFW goalkeeper Michael Knitter make eight saves in the shutout. Freshman
Perez Agaba put all three of his shots on frame and junior midfielder
Eric Weigman put a couple of attempts on goal.
Tyler Brumbaugh hit a post on an attempt in the 76th minute and freshman
Matt Guy was unable to get the rebound attempt to goal.
Maia, the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, finished his third career start with four stops in defeat.
IUPUI's next action will be in the semifinals round of The Summit League Championships being held in Rochester, Mich. next weekend. The Jaguars enter the postseason as either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed.
