WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Senior
Jernisha Cann became IUPUI's all-time leading rebounder, corralling 13 rebounds to go along with 17 points in the Jaguars' 80-44 loss to No. 23 Purdue Sunday afternoon at Mackey Arena. Cann broke the previous record of 874 rebounds, held by IUPUI Athletics Hall of Fame member Tiffany Kyser.
IUPUI (1-1) shot just 26.2 percent in the loss, missing numerous looks from inside the paint. "It felt like we missed 30 layups today," Head Coach Shann Hart remarked. "I think that if we had made even half of those, maybe we settle down and put up a better fight."
The Jaguars started slowly but were able to hang with Purdue (1-0), tying the score at 4 on runner by
Brittany Ransom 2:12 into the contest; from there, however, it was downhill for IUPUI, as they hit just one field goal over the next 12:16, allowing the Boilermakers to go on a 27-8 run. Jodi Howell knocked down two threes during the stretch, while Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton had 10 points during the run.
Purdue hit 57.7 percent of their attempts in the first 20 minutes of play, knocking down 5-of-9 three-pointers to put the Jags on their heels.
Faced with a 19-point deficit, the Jags were their own worst enemy, failing to knock down looks from in the paint. In the opening 20 minutes, IUPUI went 7-of-36 from the field, a 19.4-percent clip.
Cann had 9 of IUPUI's 23 points at intermission, but was just 2-of-10 from the field.
Looking for a historic comeback in the second half, the Jaguars came out with an aggressive defense, holding the Boilermakers without a basket for the opening three minutes, but could not capitalize, hitting just one field goal in the same stretch.
Another cold spell, this one lasting 9:37, doomed IUPUI's chances of coming back.
Just 6:08 into the second half, Cann grabbed her 10th rebound of the game, surpassing Kyser in the IUPUI record books.
In tallying her 33rd career double-double, Cann finished the day with 878 career rebounds, four ahead of Kyser. The senior needs just 122 boards to become the first 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound performer in IUPUI women's basketball history; the feat would make her the third player in Summit League history to achieve the feat.
Wisdom-Hylton had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Purdue, while three other Boilermakers - FahKara Malone, Howell and Brittany Rayburn each finished in double figures.
For IUPUI,
Laura Blaydes and
Elizabeth Mercer each tallied their first collegiate points, with Blaydes hitting 2-of-3 free throws and Mercer knocking down a three from the wing in the second half.
The Jaguars will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Nov. 19, when they host IU-Southeast. The game will begin at 7 p.m. from The Jungle. Fans can follow the game via
