FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IUPUI volleyball team appears to be peaking at the right time, sweeping potential Summit League Tournament foe IPFW, 3-0, Friday night at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. The win over the Mastodons was the Jags' first in the Summit City since Oct. 26, 2002.
IUPUI (16-13, 9-6 Summit) clinched a winning season in Summit League play and pulled within one game of the third seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament. IPFW (15-13, 10-5 Summit) currently holds the spot.
The Jaguars hit .311 for the match, getting 15 kills from
Kalyse Reimbold and a career-high 11 kills from
Nicole Jenkins in the 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 win.
Early on, it did not appear that the Jags would sweep through the Mastodons; a 4-0 IPFW run early in the set put the 'Dons ahead, 10-7, and forced IUPUI coach Steve Payne into an early timeout. The Jaguars responded almost immediately, tying the match at 12 on a Reimbold kill and moved ahead 19-16 on a kill by
Danielle Goodnight, causing IPFW to take a timeout.
The Jags maintained their lead through the set, but IPFW tied the set at 23 after a service ace, tying the set and causing Payne's second timeout. Reimbold came out of the timeout with her fourth kill of the set, giving the Jags a set point; an IPFW attack error clinched the set for IUPUI.
IUPUI carried their momentum into the second set, using a 4-0 run to pull ahead, 7-4, using kills by
Ashley Johnson and Reimbold during the run. The Jags held the lead for the remainder of the set, never letting the Mastodons tie the match. When IPFW came within a point at 17-16, the Jags reeled off a 4-1 run to go ahead, 21-17 and cause another IPFW timeout.
The break did nothing to slow IUPUI's momentum, as IUPUI closed on a 4-1 run to move ahead, 2-0. using a Goodnight ace, Jenkins kill and a kill by
Monica Suding to clinch the set.
Leading two sets to none, IUPUI kept their foot on the accelerator, racing out to a 4-1 lead and caused IPFW to burn a quick timeout; IUPUI kept pushing, extending the lead to 12-7 following an IPFW bad set, causing the Mastodons to use their final timeout less than halfway through the set.
This time, IPFW responded, coming within two at 15-13, which caused Payne to take a timeout. IPFW eventually tied the match at 16, but the Jaguars responded with a 5-0 run on twi kills apiece from Suding and Reimbold.
Another Reimbold kill made it 23-18, and
Shari Bernhardt followed with a service ace to make it, 24-18, and give the Jags a match point. Jenkins's 11th kill of the night clinched the set and match.
