DeKALB, Ill. -- The IUPUI women's basketball team will tipoff the 2008-09 season with a contest versus Northern Illinois University on Friday night. Tipoff from the Convocation Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The Jaguars are coming off their first-ever berth in The Summit League Tournament championship game and a 17-win campaign in 2007-08.
IUPUI dropped a 90-81 decision to the OGBR Legends in their exhibition opener, but showed their offensive talents throughout the game, with four players finishing in double figures.
Julia Whitted led the way with 18 points off the bench, while
Nicole James had 15.
Jernisha Cann and
Brykeesha Tate finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
In the 2007-08 season, the Jaguars tied a school record with 17 wins, while their 33 games played set a new school record.
Entering the 2008-09 campaign, IUPUI will be looking to take the next step into the NCAA Tournament, and will rely on a strong interior game and stifling defense to get there. Cann and Whitted were both consistent double-double threats on the inside a season ago, each tallying 13 double-doubles.
Cann, the two-time Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, needs 18 rebounds to become IUPUI's all-time leading rebounder and 143 boards to become the first 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound performer in school history.
