INDIANAPOLIS – Despite leading two games to one, the IUPUI volleyball team could not hold on, fading to a 3-2 loss to UMKC Saturday night at The Jungle.  The Jaguars recorded 109 digs in the match, marking the fourth time this season in which they went over the 100-dig mark in their 29-31, 25-19, 28-26, 19-25, 14-16 loss.

IUPUI (9-8, 2-2 Summit) was led by Kalyse Reimbold, who had 25 kills, and Chelsea Bastin, who had 31 digs to mark her second-best total of her career.  However, UMKC (8-12, 3-3 Summit) had three players with 10 or more kills and tallied 18 blocks to shut down the IUPUI attack.

In a match that featured 52 ties and 21 lead changes, UMKC struck first with a 31-29 win.  Early on, the Jaguars took a 15-13 lead after a Danielle Goodnight kill, only to see the lead slip away as UMKC rallied to take a 24-23 lead after two IUPUI errors.

The Jaguars responded with a kill from Dana Gardner to tie the set, and a Kangaroo attack error created a set point for IUPUI.  Another UMKC error gave the Jags set point, but a kill from Jamie Hagerman tied the set at 26.  A Shari Bernhardt kill made it 27-26; however, another UMKC kill tied the set before another Bernhardt kill gave the Jags their fourth set point.

A Kate Humphreys kill tied the set at 28, but a UMKC service error set IUPUI up with set point #5.  A Kangaroo kill knotted the set at 29, and an IUPUI error gave the Roos their second set point, and they capitalized, using a Jaguar error to go up 1-0 with a 31-29 win.

The second set was again close, with IUPUI pulling away midway through the set with an 8-4 run, taking a 16-11 advantage.  Following a UMKC timeout, the Jags pushed their lead to six points after a Kangaroo attack error.  UMKC closed to within three points, but a Gardner kill gave the Jags a four point lead and a Reimbold service ace pushed the lead to 19-14, and a kill by Nicole Jenkins made the score 22-17 and forced a Kangaroo timeout.

The Kangaroos came within 22-19, but an Ashley Johnson kill pushed lead back to four, and a Reimbold kill and UMKC error closed the set at 25-19 for the Jags.

Following an eight-minute break, the Jags and Kangaroos traded points until UMKC used a 5-1 run to open a 15-11 lead and force an IUPUI timeout.  The break served the Jags well, as they reeled off five straight points to take a 16-15 lead following a Gardner kill.

UMKC responded by opening a three-point lead at 21-18, but the Jags answered with a kill from Johnson and Reimbold, sandwiched around a Kangaroo error to tie the set.  IUPUI took two of the next three points to create a set point, but UMKC rallied for two straight points to tie the set at 24.

A Reimbold kill gave the Jags another set point, but two straight Kangaroo points gave the Roos their first set point of the third set.  However, Gardner tied the set with a kill, and a Monica Suding kill gave the Jags another set point; following a UMKC attack error, IUPUI took a 2-1 set lead.

Needing one win to claim the match, the Jaguars opened an 11-8 lead and seemed on the verge of controlling the set.  However, UMKC reeled off five straight points to go up 13-11.  While the Jags closed to within two points at 13-15, the Kangaroos continued their run, going up 21-16 to force IUPUI’s second timeout of the set.

Trading points the rest of the way, UMKC tied the match with a 25-19 win, as the margin of victory between the teams was even up until that point.

Early on in the fifth set, the teams traded points before UMKC took two consecutive points to open a 9-6 lead and force an IUPUI timeout.  A service error and a Gardner kill brought the Jags within a point, but UMKC stretched their lead again before the Jags closed within one on a Reimbold kill, forcing an IUPUI timeout.

Following a lengthy rally, UMKC came away with a crucial point, pushing their lead to 13-11.  Still, the Jags tied the set and match at 13 after a Kangaroo attack error.  Another rally ensued, but UMKC came away with the point, setting up their first match point.  Reimbold saved the Jags with a kill, but a Kangaroo kill and an IUPUI error gave the Kangaroos the set and match.

The Jaguars will attempt to halt their two-match losing streak when they travel to Fargo, N.D., to take on North Dakota State.  The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. CT from the Bentson Bunker Arena.
