Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team yielded two early goals and never established an offensive rhythm on its way to a 3-0 loss to Oakland at Kuntz Stadium on Saturday. Stefan St. Louis scored twice for Oakland, including the eventual game-winner in the 11th minute.
"We came out flat and you've got to credit Gary Parsons and his team, they came in and got a result," IUPUI Head Coach
Steve Franklin said. "They're a senior laden bunch, and it showed today."
St. Louis took advantage of a defensive lapse to score his first goal as Stew Givens' long throw-in allowed the Oakland (10-4-0, 4-1-0 Summit) attacker to get in behind the defensive backfield. The speedy St. Louis dribbled the ball well inside the 18-yard box and drove a shot past freshman goalkeeper
Tyler Keever inside the right post.
It was his fourth score of the season.
The Golden Grizzlies added insurance just over seven minutes later when Gabe Hernandez drilled a 30-yard bomb inside the left post. Sebastian Harris set up the play by lofting a short centering pass back to Hernandez, who scored for the second time this season.
IUPUI seemed to cut the lead in half before halftime when
Perez Agaba put a shot through the Oakland defense, but the play was setup when
Ben Heidari collided with OU goalkeeper Steve Clark, who had possession of the ball. The collision jarred the ball loose, resulting in a whistle that negated the score.
Otherwise, the IUPUI (7-6-2, 2-2-0 Summit) attack was outshot 16-8 overall and 7-2 on net. Junior
Eric Weigman led the Jaguars with three shot attempts, putting one on goal.
St. Louis capped the scoring with a great individual effort, running through a pair of defenders before putting a tough angled strike past Keever.
Keever recorded four saves and Clark made two stops for Oakland.
One of the few bright spots on Saturday came in the form of a charitable donation from the IUPUI soccer program to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Jaguars wore pink jerseys and auctioned them off over the course of the match, resulting in over $2,000 raised for the fight against breast cancer.
Three additional jerseys -
Javier Portillo's No. 6,
Cam Williams's No. 17 and
Francisco Maia's No. 31 - are still up for bid by
clicking here. Those auctions will close on Monday morning.
IUPUI concludes its home slate on Tuesday night when it hosts Wright State in a non-conference tilt. The Senior Night kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
That game can also be seen live over the internet as part of the IUPUI LIVE! package.
