INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team allowed three first half goals and never got on track offensively as the Jaguars limped to a 4-0 defeat at Butler on Tuesday evening. Butler's Boris Gatzky netted the game-winner in the 14th minute and Eduardo Garcia and Ben Kissick also scored in the victory.
The four goals allowed were the most by the Jaguars this season as Butler outshot the guests 21-6 overall and 11-3 on net.
Gatzky got free for the game-winner off a feed from Frank Patano 13:59 into play, blasting a shot past freshman goalkeeper Tyler Keever for his second score of the year. Later in the first half, Garcia weaved his way through the IUPUI (6-5-2) midfield before lacing a shot through traffic for his first tally of the season.
Butler (9-2-2) tacked on a third score with just under nine minutes left before halftime when Kissick capped a corner kick restart, setup by Michael Clayton. BU finished the day's scoring with a penalty kick in the final minute. Redshirt freshman Ross Piechocki was whistled for pulling down a Butler attacker just beyond the six-yard box as a cross rolled through harm's way.
BU's Joe Wienman netted that score, putting a shot past IUPUI reserve goalkeeper Francisco Maia, who mopped up the final 22 minutes of the match.
IUPUI's best scoring chance of the day came in the 55th minute when freshman Javier Portillo had a bouncing attempt glance off the left post. Portillo's try eluded Butler goalkeeper Nick Hegeman, but deflected harmlessly back onto the field of play.
Sophomore defender Derek Craig also had a quality chance when he put a header on target in the 56th minute, but directly into the chest of Hegeman.
Hegeman made three saves in the shutout victory while Keever recorded seven stops in defeat. Keever dropped to 4-3-2 as IUPUI's starter in goal.
Portillo and Craig led IUPUI with two shots apiece while Garcia had four for the Bulldogs.
IUPUI returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Western Illinois in a Summit League match at Kuntz Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m..
