INDIANAPOLIS -- Needing a win to keep pace near the top of The Summit League, the IUPUI women's basketball team will take on third-place Oakland University Monday night at The Jungle. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m..
Undefeated on Mondays in Summit League play, the Jaguars will attempt to bounce back from Saturday's disappointing 68-50 loss to IPFW. IUPUI (8-12, 4-4 Summit) will lean on Jernisha Cann and Julia Whitted on the interior, while looking to Nicole James on the perimeter.
Cann leads the Jags with 12.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, while Whitted posted her fourth double-double of the season in Saturday's loss, finishing with 20 points and 10 boards. James has excelled on Mondays, averaging 14.0 points in the three Monday games the Jaguars have played.
Oakland (13-5, 6-2 Summit) ranks among the country's elite offensive teams, averaging 76.5 points per game, the 12th-best mark among Division I teams. Junior Jessica Pike leads the Golden Grizzlies' attack, averaging 17.5 points per game.
Last season, IUPUI and Oakland met three times, with the Grizzlies taking the season series, 2-1. The Jaguars took the first game of the year, 50-46, but Oakland won XX-XX at The Jungle and 75-60 in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Semifinals to end IUPUI's season.
In the Feb. 2 meeting, Cann pulled down an IUPUI-Division I record 20 rebounds; the junior had two double-doubles in three meetings with Oakland a year ago.
The Jaguars will stay in Indianapolis this weekend, welcoming UMKC and Southern Utah to The Jungle.
