INDIANAPOLIS -- A spirited second-half rally was not enough to bring the IUPUI women's basketball team back from a horrible-shooting first half, as the Jaguars fell to IPFW, 68-50, Saturday evening at The Jungle.
Despite hitting seven of their first eight field-goal attempts in the second half, IUPUI (8-12, 4-4 Summit) could not overcome a first half in which they shot 8-for-33.
The Jaguars made sure to get the ball into the post in the early second half, allowing sophomore
Julia Whitted to gradually bring IUPUI back. Whitted hit four of the Jags' seven field goals in the first 3:46 of the second half, cutting the Mastodon lead to 3.
The Staunton, Ind.-native finished with her sixth double-double of the season, posting 20 points and 10 rebounds.
However, the Jaguars would get no closer, as IPFW (8-11, 5-3 Summit) weathered the storm and gradually pulled away to snap IUPUI's three-game winning streak.
While IUPUI outscored the Mastodons, 28-14, in the paint, it was IPFW who found success from outside, hitting 24-of-50 field-goal attempts and scoring 48 points from the outside. Meanwhile, the Jaguars were able to generate just 22 points from the perimeter.
As they did in the first half, IUPUI began to settle for jumpers, failing to hit their first 10 three-point attempts before
Nicole James knocked one down from the wing. The James three cut the Jaguar deficit to 10, but IPFW came down the court and answered, as they were able to do most of the day, getting a Tina Moen jumper to push the lead back to 12.
With 5:30 to play, it appeared as if the Jags would have one more push in them, as
Farren Stackhouse knocked down a three from the wing, making the score, 47-55. However, Courtney Reed hit a three on the other end, smothering any momentum IUPUI had gained.
Reed had a career-high 16 points in the game, hitting all four of her three-point attempts. For the game, IPFW hit over 50 percent of their long-range attempts, going 9-for-17.
With IPFW sagging off the perimeter to focus on the interior, the Jaguars could not force the Mastodons to extend their defense in the first half.
The Mastodons shot 6-of-10 over the final 7:30, while the Jags hit 2-of-10 attempts. The difference allowed IPFW to close on a 15-5 run, turning a 14-13 advantage into a 28-19 lead at halftime.
Johnna Lewis-Carlisle, The Summit League's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 18 points.
Jernisha Cann continued her run of double-digit rebounding efforts to four games, a season-best.
IUPUI fell to 1-4 on Saturdays in Summit League play. However, they are 3-0 on Monday nights.
The Jaguars will return to The Jungle on Monday, Jan. 28, when they host Oakland at 7 p.m. The game will be available on SummitTV, at
