ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Summit League has announced that the IUPUI men’s tennis team was picked to finish third in a preseason poll of the league’s seven head coaches.
The Jaguars, who return five letterwinners to their lineup, finished third in the poll with 24 points, trailing defending conference champion Oral Roberts and Western Illinois.
IUPUI is led by the 2006-07 Newcomer of the Year in Gabriel Garcia and second-team selection Javier Saab. Sophomores Gregory Sosa, Josh Kutch and Blake Powers will provide additional depth and experience for the Jags.
Last season, head coach Brandon Currie’s squad reached the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament after a one-year absence.
Oral Roberts placed first in the poll with four first-place votes and 34 points. Western Illinois picked up three first-place tallies and 33 points. Following IUPUI in fourth was UMKC with 22 points, while IPFW had 16 points. Centenary and South Dakota State rounded out the poll with 10 and 8 points, respectively.
The 2008 Summit League Men’s Championship will be hosted by IPFW April 25-26. The top four seeds will compete in the tournament.
The Jaguars will open their home slate with a match against the University of Dayton on Friday, Jan. 25. The match will begin at 6:30 p.m. from the Indianapolis Tennis Center.
