FIRST HALF BOMBARDMENT CARRIES JAGS TO 69-48 WIN OVER ORU

IUPUI limits Golden Eagles to 14 first-half points to cruise to victory

TULSA, Okla. – Using their best first half of the season, the IUPUI women’s basketball team blitzed Oral Roberts early and cruised to a 68-49 win at the Mabee Center Monday night.
IUPUI (8-11, 4-3 Summit) continued their climb in The Summit League standings with the win. Jernisha Cann posted her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 18 points and matching her season high with 14 rebounds. The double-double was Cann’s eighth of the season and 27th of her career.
The Jaguars received solid performances from just about every player who appeared in the game, finishing with three players in double figures. The 68 points were a season high for the Jags, who shot 23-for-49 from the field.
In winning their third straight game, IUPUI held Oral Roberts (10-8, 4-3 Summit) scoreless for the first five minutes of the first half. Working with a 16-10 lead, the Jaguars outscored the Golden Eagles, 19-4, over the last 7:44 of the stanza.
Crisp ball movement around 2-3 zone allowed the Jaguars to find seems and easy baskets. After Brykeesha Tate knocked down a long jumper from the corner, IUPUI got the ball inside to Cann and Whitted. The Kansas City, Mo.-native had back-to-back baskets, and on the next possession, Whitted converted a three-point play to push the lead to 29-14.
The Jags hit 8-of-10 field goals in the stretch, with six different players knocking down baskets. The run was capped by Farren Stackhouse’s three-pointer with seven seconds to play, pushing the IUPUI lead to 35-14 at intermission.
In the first half, the Jags assisted on 11 of their 15 baskets and finished the game with 16 helpers on their 23 field goals.
Crisp defense also helped IUPUI pull away, as the constant ball pressure limited Oral Roberts to just five field goals in 27 first-half attempts. Despite hitting 13-of-37 shots in the second half, the Golden Eagles finished the game with a 28.1 field-goal percentage.
The 35 first-half points were the most by the Jaguars this season.
Oral Roberts whittled the lead to as little as 15 points with 7:22 to play, but IUPUI iced the game at the free-throw line, hitting 11-of-18 free throws.
Jenny Hardin led the Golden Eagles with 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half.
Christina Cunningham and Tate both finished with 10 points for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they open a doubleheader against IPFW at 4:30 p.m. It will be ‘Pack the House’ night in The Jungle, with Jaguar fans encouraged to arrive en masse. Bobbleheads will be given away prior to the game.
The contest will be available on The Summit League website at www.thesummitleague.org, with Scott McCauley calling the action on the webstream.
Prior to the women’s game, the men will host Oakland at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Head Coach Ron Hunter will coach the game in his bare feet to help raise awareness for Samaritan's Feet. Fans are urged to make donations to the cause by visiting the Samaritan's Feet website while IUPUI students are encouraged to come to the game barefoot.
