MILWAUKEE - The IUPUI men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 7-0 loss at Marquette on Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars (0-1) will face Northern Illinois at the Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center on Sunday.
Marquette (2-0) claimed a hard earned doubles point to open play by sweeping all three matches. Brett Binkley and Mark Rutherford took an 8-7 match from
Gabriel Garcia and
Javier Saab while the Golden Eagles had a much easier time at Nos. 2 and 3. Trent Hegan and Dusan Medan beat #E.J. Dechow
and Gregory Sosa
8-2 while Jorge Yunes
and Blake Powers# lost at No. 3, 8-6.
In singles play, Sosa provided the lone highlight by splitting sets with Niko Boulieris at No. 3. Boulieris took the match by winning a super tiebreak, 10-7.
At No. 1, Garcia lost to Medan 6-4, 6-3 and Saab lost at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3.
Yunes took Stephen Shao to the limit in the first set before falling 7-5, Shao rode the momentum to a 6-1 win in the second set.
