EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The IUPUI volleyball team continued their strong early season play, knocking off Evansville for the first time since 2005, sweeping the Purple Aces, 3-0, at the Carson Center.
IUPUI (3-2) senior Carol Newell led the way, posting 10 kills while hitting .273. Sophomore Hillary Houston tallied match highs with 11 kills in 31 attempts.
Strong defense carried the Jaguars, as they downed Evansville, 30-23, 30-24, 30-16. For the match, IUPUI recorded 13 total blocks while limiting the Purple Aces to a .073 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Ashley Johnson led the Jaguars defense, posting two solo blocks and four helpers. Fellow sophomore Monica Suding also keyed the effort in the middle, assisting on four blocks while tallying one solo block.
Evansville (2-2) was hampered by 24 attack errors and six service errors in the match, while over half of IUPUI's points came on the offensive end, whether by kill (44) or service ace (9).
The Jaguars kept the Purple Aces off balance throughout the match, causing three Evansville players to record negative hitting percentages. IUPUI held Evansville to a -.071 hitting percentage in the last game of the match.
Sophomore Danielle Goodnight keyed the service effort for the Jags, posting four service aces. Goodnight also had her first double-double of the season with 27 assists and 12 digs.
Evansville native Devika Bellamy narrowly missed her first triple-double of the year in her return home, compiling nine kills, nine assists and 10 digs.
The Jaguars will open the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational on Saturday, September 1 at 7 p.m., when they tangle with the Skyhawks of Tennessee-Martin. IUPUI will take on North Carolina A&T at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 6:30 p.m. contest versus Central Michigan.
